I have noticed in Jegs' catalog, a lot of the torque converter section states "Not for use with big blocks, nitrous, or blower applications". i understand the nitrous and blower parts, but what the heck are big block guys supposed to use for a cheaper yet respectable brand of converter??
I'm lookin for a 2500-2800 converter for the TH350 when the 402 goes in.

It says not for big blocks, but I've used them behind two 454's, one LS5, and one LS6 with no problems....... but they were stock builds...

well if you put it behind a stock built LS6, i would imagine it would of had torque around 450-500ft. lbs. I'm expectin the 402 to have maybe 450
Hughes 25 (2500) works great 468 w/174 weiand supercharger '70 Chevelle

What happens with the cheaper convertors is they are not built to handle high torque loads without slipping excessively. The slippage would be most noticeable to those that know their exact trap rpm vs. trap speed in the 1/4 mile. Most people wouldn't "feel it" slip in a street application.A fellow TCer George "kettbo" had a Hughes 2500...replaced it with a B&M 3000 Holeshot and his car picked up almost 4 tenths and 3 MPH in the 1/4 mile as the Hughes had too much slippage for his big block.Same convertor would be fine with a mild 350 or a stock 396/402

If you want a good strong converter that will hold up to rediculous amounts of power and be ok behind the big block for a good price check out monster transmission. Make sure you have your cam specs and stuff.

You gotta watch B&M. Personally I dislike ANYTHING that they make...Except their shifters. It's hit or miss with their converters. I've purchased a few that looked exceptionally manufactured and a couple I've sent back due to poor welding and even one had missing mount tabs on it. But, that's my experience with them. I'm not your momma. Personally I would go with the Hughes converters, a little pricey but remember you gotta pay if you wanna play.
