Hey guys, I have 3 chrome auto gauge gauges I've liked over the years. My water temp is on the fritz and I'm thinking of replacing it soon. I was also thinking of replacing my current ammeter with a voltmeter. What do you guys think?
Also, my ammeter usually moves between 0 and 2. Is that normal? Is't a weird gauge that my dad out in 20 years ago. Thanks for any help.

I prefer a volt meter over an ammeter.
Knowing the alternator is kicking out 60 amps won't let you know the battery is only holding 9 volts and fading.
It also rules out another failure possibility by taking the main power feed out of the interior of the car.

Yes, assuming it is wired correctly. Wired correctly, the amp meter shows the batterys charging rate. A low charging rate means the batterys fully charged.
Full flow amp meters were known to start car fires which is why they are not popular today. A voltmeter is better. See link http://www.autometer.com/tech_faq_answer.aspx?sid=1&qid=5
