We finally got started on the resto of the Flint LS6 car in the shop yesterday. What we found was amazing. The original owner took this motor out of the car with around 30K on it and stored it. The pan and oil pump screen didn't have a speck of sludge and there was no rust inside anywhere after sitting 37 years. It looks almost brand new and it spins like it was just assembled with no ridges in any of the cylinders. Our engine builder Steve was amazed at the condition and believes he may not even have to bore this block. Even the old oil looked good!!!!

Truly amazing condition for it's age and such! We should all be so lucky (and we're not!). I look forward to following this project to completion. Keep those pics coming.

Outside looks awfully scungy for only 30K, But I don't know if they tended to leak "back in the day."
The guts do look good though!

Agreed Eric, but the 2 years this motor ran it was in Michigan and it has been stored most of its' life in Michigan until I believe 2004. What's interesting as well is the owners manual has all the oil changes recorded in it with the mileage when it was changed and I also have most of the receipts from the local speed shop where the original owner bought the oil.

Jon, I'll get a picture of the pan for you as soon as I can, I forgot to take one of it.:clonk:

My 72 did not need bored when I built it. 49K miles, and only about a thousanth wear in the cylinders. The oil was changed every 2500-3500 miles though....

Dave, this guy has oil changes written in the manual every month, sometimes twice a month. It slacked off in the winter some as I suspect he didn't drive it as much. It's interesting that this motor is still in this good of shape. I yanked the dash today and found plenty of mouse evidence and a big old snake skin as well!!!

I'd be interested in what the bearings look like, Mike. Even though my 72 had regular oil changes, and was clean inside, the bearings were SHOT. Most of them were down to the copper. Needless to say, the oil they had then wasn't too much better than the oil of today...

Looks like fun, though. How was the Rod Run??
