How hard is it to replace the center link in my '68 SS El Camino? I have noticed a bit of wander on the highway, and looked at it and it is worn out. Doesn't look too difficult, and I assume I would have to have it aligned after replacing it, but just what exactly is involved in replacing it as far as procedure, special tools, etc?

Don't need anything special. SOme plier to remove and install cotter pins and the correct sized sockets and/or wrenches and you're good to go.

To get the centerlink in and out, you have to remove the idle arm from the frame. I'll tell you that now and save you a little agrivation when trying to figure out why the centerlink won't come out. smile.gif

Remove the tie rods from the centerlink and push them out of the way, then unbolt the idler arm from the centerlink and then from the frame and pull that out, then unbolt the pitman arm from the centerlink. Put it back together in reverse order and don't forget new cotter pins.

Then you just have to get the tie rods adjusted at the alignment shop.

Good instructions from Tron. I just put a whole new suspension in my '68 and wish I read this first. I wound up bolting the idler into the center link first, connected it to the pitman arm, and then put the idler arm onto the frame bolts.
You'll see you don't much room to move the center link around once you place it over the steel guard in the center of the frame.
