I have a 66 chevelle with front disc rear drum, and a 12 bolt posi rear. the car is standard hight, and I want to put American Racing torque thrust 2,s on it but with the 390 gears and a turbor 400 i need a tall tire to help with the high rpms at highway speed. I would like either a 15 or 17 inch rim. My questions are what backspacing in either 15 0r 17 inch rim will clear the shocks and how wide can i go 8 inch, 9 inch, or 10 and how tall of a tire will fit in the wheelwell without modification. I hope i can fit a 9 or 10 inch wide rim in the back with a 26 to 28 inch tall tire. Any input would help thanks.

I would stick with a 15X8 with 4.5" backspacing, and if you ran a 275/60-15 you would have 28" tall tire.

With Dave.....finding a 15x9 in rim is all but impossible and the tire slection wont vary anyway. Fitting a 10 in there will be tough then youll be skirting clearance issues.

thanks guys for the advise. I think i might go with a 17 inch rim, i have seen some of the members cars and 17 torque thrust two's look pretty good. I wonder if i can find a tall tire for the rear so it doesnt look to low profile?

if you go with the 15 inch wheel. a 255 70 tire gets tall. looks like a 275 60 but gives you a bit more tire clearance. I run them on the back of my 68 elky with stock 8 inch corvette ralley wheels. jim
