VIN is the engine designator-13127, 13327, 13337, 13369 are the beginning numbers of 6-cylinder 300 series cars. Look here for more info on determining models and motors- http://www.chevellestuff.com/1968/index.htm
6-cylinder cars didn't have the engine size bezels, 300's had Chevelle script on the front fenders, don't know what you mean by SS holes in the rear body pan-the 300's had a Chevrolet red white and blue emblem in the center of the rear cove. Taillights should have the backup lights in them and the rear bumper should not have any holes in it for backup lights.

Welcome to another 300 post.

As far as the holes in the rear 1/4s there was an emblem that said Chevelle

I've ran across this phenomena a few times. I just purchased a 67 Chevy II with a V8 cowl tag and 6 cyl VIN. In the past I've had a 67 Camaro and still have a 66 Chevelle with the same issue.

From what I understand they built the cars (body/interior) including cowl tag first then install the ordered engine with VIN to match. I don't worry as long as the rivets are original & VIN matches title............
