: looking for a laptop
sschevellefan Nov 26th, 09, 2:46 AM I`m going to be starting my new career as a truck driver and I`m looking for a laptop so I can keep up on my emails and comunicate with my family too. I don`t know much about computers so all the details go right over my head. My requirments are that it be wifi compatable and have a dvd player and either a built in webcam or a spot to plug in a small one. I found this one but I don`t know if it`s any good but it`s in my price range.

I had one in my trk when I ran the road but I paid $1,200 for it. I'm not much help but you might try posting in the bug hunt section where all the computer helpers hang out:thumbsup:
Xtreme70SS396 Nov 26th, 09, 9:29 AM Unless you're running some serious applications (gaming, etc) any of them will do nicely for your purposes.
FYI - I believe Best Buy has a Black Friday special on an HP laptop for under $200 you might want to take a look at.

I don`t have $1200 to spend and couldn`t justify the cost either. I thought that bug hunt was for trying to fix problems with your computer so I put it here. Maybe I`ll post it there too.

I won`t be able to go Friday and won`t have the cash either. I`m not into gaming, just surfing the net and emails and watching DVD`s. Thanks guys.
Tom Mobley Nov 26th, 09, 10:24 AM get one of those $300 netbook things. Good enough for email and a little web cruising. cheap too.

Yeah but the screen is too small and I haven`t found one yet that has a dvd drive. For a little more than $300 I can get a lap top that has the stuff I need. I just don`t know anything about computers.
Mike72ss Nov 26th, 09, 10:41 AM I'd get a Dell. Parts are MUCH easier to obtain after the warranty is up, if need be.

sschevellefan Nov 26th, 09, 10:43 AM I`ve got a Dell desktop and it works great but I think nthe laptops are out of my price range. I`m still shopping though.
67300Dlx Nov 26th, 09, 11:31 AM I just went a bought new laptops for me and my wife. I do just about the same as you wanna do. I talked to alot of tech before I bought. I bought an Asus. which make all the parts for dell,HP,etc... this is the machine i got and it is great. http://tinyurl.com/y9m22k4
Good luck with you new Job.
Dean Nov 26th, 09, 11:42 AM Just a thought but when big corporations upgrade their computers and turn the old ones in, a lot of computer shops buy the used Dell computers by the truck load, refurbish and sell them cheap on craigslist.

sschevellefan Nov 26th, 09, 12:02 PM Dean, thanks for the info but I honestly don`t trust the ones off of craigslist. With my limited computer knowledge I would be better off with a new one. I don`t mind spending the money for a new one but I don`t want to get one that is junk.
Dean Nov 26th, 09, 12:17 PM It is a gamble for sure.
I was pretty lucky I suppose but the shop did warranty my 610 (for a while)
They fixed it a couple of times for free but the hard drive crashed after it was out of warranty and they only supplied free labor to replace it. :(
The new HD cost me around $80.00 as I recall.

Mr69 Nov 26th, 09, 6:37 PM Here's a thread I started a while back.
The HP that was suggested to me, I went and looked at at best buy. It looked real good. had a DVD player and overall was a very good buy for $729. 17" screen (actuallly 16.9 or 16.8??)
They had one with a little bit smaller specs (smaller screen less memory) for $549? $529?
either of the 3 would be great for you.

I wouldn`t say that. I just posted links to 2 that I was looking at but I have no idea if they are any good. I guess I could have put a price limit in the first post though. I`m not spending more than $500 on one at thispoint and $350 is better. I might just drag my wifes uncle with me to check them out on person since he knows alot more than I do about these things.
Xtreme70SS396 Nov 26th, 09, 9:47 PM For your needs, either one of them will work fine. In fact, they are more than you need - but at that price you shouldn't worry about it.
