I currently have air shocks on my 1966 malibu and the coil springs look like they may be original and need of replacement the rear tires are 275/60 15" and the height at the fender lip is about 27.5 " which is about were i like it . I am going to replace the springs and shocks and was wondering what springs i would need to acheive this height - stock spring or heavy duty or wagon springs any part #'s , or should i leave the worn springs and add air bags
thanx

To be honest, if the springs arent worn or sagging i wouldnt replace them. and if i did replace them it would be with a stock replacement. raising the rear can cause wheelhop in some cases and isnt very good for the u-joints. sure a little is acceptible, but wagon springs arent the answer.

i went with a pair of AirLift Dragbags, havent used them much. but with them set at 25 psi (max is 35psi) in both bags the rear didnt raise a whole bunch, maybe .5 to 1 inch. though it seems to have firmed the rear suspension a great deal. although they dont list the dragbag on their website AirLift makes two kinds of airbags. the dragbags and the AirLift 1000 which are more of a load leveler type thing. i would imagine they would raise the car more than the dragbags i have.

Took all the air out of the air shocks today and the rear is sagging alot approx 25" high at the fender lip from the ground looking for about 27 to 28" high from the ground the front measures about 29" high so i believe new springs and shocks are needed but which ones regular, heavy duty , wagon or what ever else is out there

Rat on Stick gave you good advice ..... you don't say what model 66 you have BB or SB but get a Moog catalog and chose the replacement spring for your car( 6197 is pbly close) I have had many different springs in my 66 and definitely do not go too stiff ..... just because your deflated air shocks let the car come down does not mean your springs are sagged check your height against stock meadurements .... with shocks deflated ..... sounds like your using air shocks for tire clearance and they holding up the car not the springs !! not the way to do it.

your springs are not sagging. im using stock rear springs and from the bottom of fender lip to the ground is exactly 25 inches on my car.

the front on my car measures 26 inches. if you look closely at the front and rear wheelwells they are different dimensions. which is why there is a 1 inch difference.

if anything i would say that your front end is about 3 inches too high.

for your reference the MOOG stock type replacement for the rear is part number 6201. the heavy duty is 6197.

Car is a small block no issues with rear tire clearance 275/60 15" .I ordered the heavy duty #6197 coils today and gas shocks, with the front sitting close to 29" i hope this will bring the rear to 27" if not is there lifts you can put under the spring on the spring pearch ,i've seen the rubber spacers you can stick between the coils to get a little lift but i don't think that is the way to go
