: Help with Brakes, Springs, etc
compinv Jul 24th, 04, 9:27 PM Ok guys. I finally picked up a 70 chevelle on Ebay this week. We went and picked it up today. Ok here are my questions.
1. This car has power steering but drum brakes. I want to convert it over to power disk brakes. What donor will work for a 70 chevelle? I have access to a mid 80's malibu wagon and possibly a mid 80's camaro. Will these work? What do I need to do here?
2. I am going to drop a 454 in this car. I will of course put big block springs in the front. I want the car to have a slight rake to it so I can put big tires on it. Can anyone suggest some springs for the back. I hate to install air shocks on the car for this purpose.
I am sure I will have many more questions. Thanks in advance.

compinv Jul 25th, 04, 2:02 PM Ok guys. I ended up getting the complete set up off of a 84 malibu station wagon. I see you guys talking about B body cars. I am assuming this what you are talking about. Could everything from this station wagon be put on the 70 chevelle and work? Need some help and advise here.
Thanks Matt
TronDD Jul 25th, 04, 6:03 PM If you search the forum for "b-body" you should get a bunch of info about what will work. I'm not sure if you have to use the b-body spindle with the b-body brakes (I know the spindle allows for lager brakes but don't know if the stock b-body brakes are too big). If you have to use the spindle, then you'll also have to change your lower ball joints and either change the upper control arm or fenagle the stock one to get it to work.
Not sure if the booster and master will work either, but a stock one is easy to get. use the Malibu parts for cores and get a chevelle master and booster at the parts store.
For question #2) I highly reccomend you lower the front rather than raise the back. Chevelles have problems with wheel hop right from the factory and raising the rear end can make it worse. Some pretty big tires fit in a '70 wheel well already. If you really want more hight or stiffness search for "cargo coils". I think there should be a part number somewhere. I think they are out of the wagons and ane stiffer than the stock sedan spring.

An 84 malibu wagon is a G body.Technically, these can be made to fit but IMO is not worth the hassles. They have small metric calipers and small rotors.
B-body cars are full size chevy,Impala ,caprice, olds delta 88(rwd)buick roadmaster to name a few.If you do a search there is a website that lists all the potential donor cars.
compinv Jul 25th, 04, 10:58 PM Where should I search? Can anyone direct me to a site that has the donor cars? And can anyone tell me what has to be changed, altered, etc to make this work?
Thanks Matt
compinv Jul 26th, 04, 9:15 PM Ok thanks. I have found a 72 Grandprix that has disk brake setup and 12 bolt posi trac rear. Just wondering if they will work on the 70 Chevelle.
According to my research that is an A body car.
The front control arms were moved forward for the Grandprix. Any help here would be appreciated.
Thanks Matt

71350SS Jul 26th, 04, 10:46 PM Matt,
Where do you find this stuff! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Thats a great donor car Stuff will swap right over.Take as much of the brake parts as you can,MC
booster, calipers, brackets and spindles, rotors if their not too rusted.
The pontiac 12 bolt posi is a good one.Grab the control arms and the sway bar if it has one.Have fun and keep us posted.
Oh yeah, almost forgot,if it does have the rear sway bar grab the front bar it should be heavier than your stock bar.
