: 1st gen monte carlo worth parting?
Jim Mac Nov 23rd, 09, 9:51 PM I can get a 1st gen monty for 2K, its a bucket/console car. I havent looked at it yet, but say the dash isnt cut for a cd player. and the seats need recover. its complete with 12 bolt. Anyone think theres $2000 dollars worth of parts? If I do get it, my thinking is to keep the seats, console and 12 bolt for my 68 elcamino. and try to get as much back on whats left. But I really dont want to have that much into the parts I keep. I keep thinking its like it was 2 years ago, when you put any a body parts on craigslist and it sold in a day or two. Anymore, it seems stuff keeps getting relisted and nobody is buying. Thoughts? Jim
Sid Coleman Nov 23rd, 09, 10:47 PM I'd do it if I had the $$$.

TCSS1970 Nov 23rd, 09, 10:56 PM If it was a big block car I would think so easy, if not I would need to see what it looks like.
cheveslakr Nov 23rd, 09, 10:59 PM I just did the very same thing, the monte stuff flat doesn't sell, the chevelle/monte stuff does. If the grill is nice, it'll sell on ebay, some other chrome may also. The 70 monte dashes have a few 1/2" holes behind the burl which makes them almost garbage, the gauges and wiring is still worth $100 though. 71/72s don't have these holes and are worth another $100 for the plastic. Be careful.

Philip Nov 23rd, 09, 11:02 PM Sounds like a lot for a parts car. Does it run and drive?

I have to agree with Phil here. I am not going to tell anyone what to do with their cars, but I think it is time that people start looking at first gen Montes as more than just "Chevelle parts cars." After all, the parts between the two are interchangeable, and there is plenty of room under that long hood for a big block, or a pair of turbos.:D
Plus, if you think about it, there were really only 3 years of the muscle car Montes, and the SS Montes are far more rare than the Chevelle SS's.
Didn't mean to side-track your thread, carry on.
davewho1 Nov 24th, 09, 4:20 AM How's the body? Is the thing restorable? I'd hate to part it out and have one less early Monte in the world. Always was fond of those.
1972convss454 Nov 24th, 09, 9:09 AM I bought a '70 for $300 a month ago..... Complete minus motor and trans. Definitely got my $$$ back.

I am in the process of parting out a 1970 Monte Carlo.
All I see is Chevelle parts. There is no way I would restore a Monte Carlo unless it was a SS 454 car. It's going to cost the same money to restore either a chevelle or monte carlo in comparable condition. In the end the Chevelle is worth more and a lot easier to sell. The Monte Carlos, do not sell very well and worth less. Bigger return as Chevelle parts.
Before anybody gets all crazy on me, I am talking about cars that need a LOT of metal work or serious restoration. My Monte is RUSTY, (but it is also a loaded big block car).
BUBBA2711 Nov 24th, 09, 6:18 PM I'd get it. I'd buy every one i could find except someone crushed them all here. When scrap prices rose the cars disappeared.
GAGE 1959 Nov 24th, 09, 6:27 PM Just a thought...... did you know that the windshield and back window are the same as the chevelle ? 68 to 72 I believe .

not the doors, trunk lid, most of the interior and drive line, etc.........
cheveslakr Nov 24th, 09, 7:58 PM Door panels will fit but are different. Doors are not the same. Interior trim is the same The inner fenders are the same, the little chrome strips under the fr. fender extensions are the same. Floor pans, all glass and little else. I don't see 2k worth of parts even if the console, seats, etc are in near perfect cond. and the rear is something special.

My bad I thought they were.
Rucumn Nov 24th, 09, 10:52 PM Door glass is the same, but the 1/4 windows are different. $2000 is probably $800-$1000 high. Does it have a tach dash?
Jim Mac Nov 24th, 09, 11:15 PM Philip, I havent seen it yet. suppose to be a small block car. I think im going to forget I even thought about this idea. I think 2K would be the most I can part it for if I get lucky, but locally it seems parts just arent selling. Theres a set up A body buckets for 350 and its been listed a few times. I bought a set of buckets for 75 bucks and it was listed a day before I finally got ahold of the guy. (I did end up selling them for $225). another set of 67 buckets popped up this weekend for 75 bucks. But they did sell the next day. 12 bolts seem to be about 250 on a good day. More if you dont mind holding on to it for awhile. And the car needs to be towed, so no telling what kind of condition the drivetrain is in. jim
