Does anyone know if a P/S setup from a 70 Chevelle is a direct bolt-in (except for the pitman arm) into a 64 SS with manual steering? I've read the Jim Shea article about 10 times and haven't been able to get that information. Sounds like the box will fit, but I'm not sure if I need to modify the steering column in any way. Looks like the top shaft down to the rag joint is all one piece.
Anyone have an idea?
Thanks,
Ed

Sorry. Saginaw Steering Gear didn't make the steering columns that went into the 64 Chevelle. So I don't have any info for those models. Saginaw did make the gears.

Okay. Can I change the shaft that comes from the gear box to the rag joint? If so, any idea what could be used? Also, do you know if the 64 pitman arm will fit the gear box? I'm flying kinda blind since I've never worked with steering before.

Ed,
Box is a direct bolt-in, though you'll need a rag joint for power steering. Just make sure you have the correct pulley on the crank and pulley on the pump. Those can be tricky, especially if you're running a newer engine with a harmonic balancer. If you still have your original 283 or 327 with the internally balanced crank and the correct brackets and pullies, you should be fine. The pitman arm must be a power steering pitman arm also, though I put a p/s pitman arm up to the non p/s pitman arm and only the round hole for the center link was slightly bigger on the p/s pitman arm, otherwise, it looked exactly the same to me. I may have some pics if you need them. Let me know. Good luck. Tony
p.s. my p/s box came off a 71 Velle, but if I remember correctly, I had to move the pump's support bolt (to the man. bracket to the other hole) because of the location of bracket.

I use an 82 Z-28 box on my 64 with the stock colum, the way I went was a steering u joint splined on one end and flat on the other the splined end right on the box and then the flat end either welded or bolted to the colum I went with bolted and I also cut and sleeved the upper part of the colom by the firewall so I could remove the whole shaft to gain access to the header. It works good the only thing that took some getting used to was feeling everything thru the steering wheel since there is no rubber cushion to absorb it
