Hello. My name is Bob and I am a long time listener and first time caller. I'd like to say that I've really enjoyed the show over the years Dave.

So my question, in regards to Arizona Emissions for a big block 1970 Chevelle, is how much of the factory crap do you guys keep on the motor and actually get past emissions? I think there is a 40 year rule at which you are exempt from emissions? How much tinker can you put into the motor and still get past? It seems at some point too much lift, heads, intake combo would make you fail. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks for taking my call.

Well Bob if you get some form of classic car insurance you will be exempt from emission testing. Both my El Camino and Nova are insured with Hagerty and exempt; the best part of it is Hagerty took care of all the paper work with the state to get the exemption.

How much more does that insurance run versus standard insurance? Or is it a 'I don't care because it get's me past emissions' attitude?

So once you are exempt you can do whatever you want undert the hood? :hurray:

Marana, Tucson? ?! ?!
We were there for a couple of years and loved it.
We were out in Avra Valley on N. Anway, just north of DuBois.
Sure wish we could go back, but the job and 17 acres is keeping us here.

specialty car insurance is the answer....Hagerty in my case,, the cost is what the agreed value is of your car...call them and ask a bunch of questions...If you think your car is worth 50K it will cost you more than an agreed value of say 16K...they are super folks to deal with and know the answers.....hope this helps

on your chevelle, they dont even open the hood. You just have to get past the tail pipe sniffer. Unless your running some huge cam with mondo compression a well tuned motor should pass easily. I went the hagerty route for 3 of my cars (71 el camino, 70 chevelle, 71 camaro) and have the regular insurance on the 68 elcamino because its a daily driver. Welcome from tucson! jim

It is less expensive that regular insurance.

I live at Anway and Manville. Love the peace and quiet and all the stars in the sky.

Phoenix emissions are tougher to pass than here in Pima county. BTW none of my vehicles has ever been tested and never will. That includes a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am, 2006 GMC, 2002 Harley, 72 El Camino, 77 Nova, 79 Turbo Regal and a 94 Firebird.

As stated, the emissions test rules vary by location. Where Philip lives ( any car that drives by his house is, by defininition , LOST) there is no requirement. Where I live, in closer to Tucson, the rule for 1974 and earlier cars is tailpipe chemistry test only. The physical equipment inspection starts with 1975 models. The standard I have to meet at idle is 400ppm HC and 5% CO. I had a car with a misfire that flunked and it was tested on the rollers and passed on the combined values.

That is partly true, since I work in town by law my daily driver should be tested, but there are loop holes. The truck is within the 5 year new vehicle exemption, all motorcycles in Pima county are exempt and the other 2 are listed as pleasure only. I will retire before the truck will require testing so it will then qualify for the code 52 exemption :D

And are you saying I live in the middle of nowhere? Cause I don't, it is actually the far side of nowhere ;)

Code 52 exemption? What is that? Sounds like something that comes from Police jargon or emergency room talk.. Got any details?

I just ran my 72 SS and she passed by the skinny of her chin, BUT they never looked under the hood or for any cats. Thats good because I have none. Try running it and see what happens you may pass or at the very least just have to back off the timming and the fuel then fix it at the next stop sign. I went to the one in Chandler btw.

Before 75 nothing had cats and the under hood inspection on pre 75 cars usually is done by inspectors that have no clue what was supposed to be under there :D

I should take my El Camino just to see what they will do when it passes with numbers way to low for a 72 with a 350.

Does Hagerty limit you to X amount of miles per week/month/billing period? I'm looking to drive Chevelle 1-3 days a week, mostly to work but recreation driving too. At what point are you classified a daily driver?

I am in metro Phoenix and thus regulated by higher authorities in regards to emissions.

Not to miles just to usage. As long as you have a regular car for each licensed driver in the house and a locking garage you will have no issues. I drive mine a lot of miles each year.
