: Internet explore in back ground
77 cruiser Nov 21st, 09, 8:40 PM IE is running in the back ground, it never opens but it's running on the process list in task manager.
I use FireFox most of the time & one I heard an advertisement playing/talking & sure enough two IE were open in the task manager.
How do I keep them from doing that or is it something else?

download and run hijack this. It should kill the unwanted processes. Be careful about what you shut down.

Hijackthis doesn't kill unwanted processes, nor does is signify which processes are good or bad. Hijackthis is a reporting tool.
What you are describing could be spyware. Windows Defender should be able to find it if you run a scan.
if not, google it, this is a common problem.

Berto Nov 23rd, 09, 3:54 PM true Hijack this is a reporting tool, but does allow you to kill processes created by malware.
Trend Micro HijackThis is a free utility that generates an in depth report of registry and file settings from your computer. HijackThis makes no separation between safe and unsafe settings in its scan results giving you the ability to selectively remove items from your machine. In addition to this scan and remove capability HijackThis comes with several tools useful in manually removing malware from a computer.
IMPORTANT: HijackThis does not determine what is good or bad. Do not make any changes to your computer settings unless you are an expert computer user.
Advanced users can use HijackThis to remove unwanted settings or files.
Using HijackThis
To analyze your computer, start HijackThis and run a scan. See the Quick Start Guide [link to Quick Start, FAQs and Feedback] for help in running a scan. HijackThis will display a list of areas on your computer that might have been changed by spyware. Do not change any settings if you are unsure of what to do. There are many popular support forums on the web that provide free technical assistance by using HijackThis log files to diagnose an infected computer.
Not an expert? Just save the HijackThis report and let a friend with more troubleshooting experience take a look. A large community of users participates in online forums, where experts help interpret HijackThis scan results to clean up infected computers.
Mike Nov 23rd, 09, 4:49 PM Install this as you have more options http://www.whatsrunning.net/
UM ,the 2.2 not the 3.0 beta.
Tom Mobley Nov 23rd, 09, 8:18 PM did you see iexplore.exe or explorer.exe?
77 cruiser Nov 24th, 09, 12:02 AM iexplore.exe If I don't shut it down when I log on I'll have 2 running & then the ads start playing.
I ran defender & it found nothing, haven't tried the others yet.
ChaosEnvy Nov 24th, 09, 10:12 AM What version of IE do you have installed?
If you are using IE7 or IE8, there will always be two iexplore.exe processes running. This is default and normal. The is used for the recovery process. For instance, if your browser crashes and you get that popup, Your browser has an issue and must be closed, Send report, etc... When you restart IE, your session will be restored. This is similar to Firefoxe's restore feature.

77 cruiser Nov 24th, 09, 1:29 PM Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware does it again, got rid of the problem. I had 14 reg. keys with a trojan & 2 files infected with trojans. Surprised Avast did get them.

Good Deal.. Just remember if you update to IE8 (recommended over IE6) that you will have more than one iexplore.exe process running.
