: 1970 NOS SS Dash assembly
Redmanf1 Nov 20th, 09, 2:06 PM Hi,
I am trying to figure out what a NOS 1970 SS dash assembly (still in the box) would be worth.
I was going to use it for my 71 convertible because I am changing the interior to black or white, either way the dash is black. But I have an original that is so clean it would not need painted so I decided to use it instead.
Thanks
Nelson
Chicken Coupe Nov 20th, 09, 2:31 PM If it's the whole dash and you're selling, $100 plus shipping. I'll take it.l:)
The repos are $300-$400 for the dash carrier. If I took a wild guess, 3X-4X that for some super loaded resto project?
rak1 Nov 20th, 09, 3:53 PM at least 1k if complete easy.... Ebay and the sky is the limit.
fast67vellen2o Nov 20th, 09, 5:30 PM A real deal honest to god NOS super sport dash assembly in the box has to be worth $2,000.
70 SS acadian Nov 20th, 09, 6:48 PM I would kill for that!
70ChevelleRagtop Nov 20th, 09, 6:58 PM If you put that on Ebay, I think you would be stunned at what it might sell for.
TCSS1970 Nov 20th, 09, 7:03 PM If you ebay it let us know because I want to watch! If the right folks see it will bring a chunk of change.
DONTWANT2 Nov 20th, 09, 7:38 PM I would bet it will go so high on ebay it would scare ya. I would guess at 3-4 K. If you ebay it give us a link as i would like to watch that one for sure.
grandsport Nov 20th, 09, 7:40 PM I want to watch too!:D
70ChevelleNut Nov 20th, 09, 8:00 PM Just to be clear, are you talking the whole assembly: cluster, harness, pad, panel, mounting hardware, etc?
If so, WOW!!
If it is the panel, I would agree with Chicken Coupe.
fishhead Nov 20th, 09, 8:23 PM I want to watch too!:D
Its a dash not what your thinking...l:)
Sorry Gary...I couldnt resist...
If your not going to use that...you NEED to put it on ebay...
Redmanf1 Nov 20th, 09, 11:21 PM Hey guys thanks for the opinions. As most of you know GM sold everything separately, and this is just the dash assembly in the original box. It does not have any of the parts. I cannot ever remember seeing another one for sale, so that is why I was asking.
Thanks
Nelson

I agree. Someone will pay huge money for a NOS 1970 SS dash carrier in the box!
warrior90 Nov 21st, 09, 5:27 PM I sold an NOS GM '70-'71 SS dash housing (part number 3965475) in the GM box, on EBAY almost two years ago for $1300. I'm sure for a part that rare the price has only appreciated (even in this market). However, there are still plenty of used dash housings in virgin condition out there ($500-$750) and a high end replating ($800) will put you in like-NOS condition...so the price probably won't climb too high over $1500 (my guess, it will go $1700-$1800). Unless you get two people hell bent on doing restorations with ALL NOS PARTS...they'll drive each other's bids into the stratosphere. Good luck...that's a cool part.
fishhead Nov 21st, 09, 6:11 PM I would like to watch that auction as well...I would say at least $1500...
well as soon as ebay search comes back up...:D
wambams69ss396 Nov 21st, 09, 10:16 PM wow..........

I doubt you did. Just breaking your chops. :D
blacknblue Nov 22nd, 09, 9:52 AM Nelson, Just for curiousity sake. Are the outlines around the holes painted silver or are they chrome plated?
70ssflashback Nov 22nd, 09, 1:14 PM It would be GREAT if you'd post some clear sharp pictures of the whole dash and close ups of the painted or chromed trim lines!....I know with as much discussion as the topic gets it would be great to see a true NOS piece like this as they are not stumbled across everyday. How about putting some pictures up, to get top dollar at auction people will want to see what they are getting.....THANKS!

Trev/blk/'70 Nov 22nd, 09, 11:39 PM It might depend on when that NOS part was produced as to whether or not it had chrome or silver trim. I know on NOS truck dashes 67-72, the early produced NOS dashes were chrome, but my NOS 71-72 Cheyenne Super Woodgrain Dash has silver trim. The originals on the trucks had chrome trim. Not saying this is the case with NOS Chevelle Dashes, but could be a possibility. My thinking has to do with GM wanting to save money on plating these parts or thinking about the durability of the chrome rubbing and marking in the boxes. Trevor
Chris R Nov 23rd, 09, 12:32 AM If I had it. I wouldnt go less then 1500.
Mr69 Nov 23rd, 09, 2:22 AM Post pics on this thread. It would also show proof positive that the circles around the turn signal indicators are not painted silver.
I can't tell you how many "survivor" cars I have seen at shows with the circles painted. uh huh !:noway:

For the sake of reference, here's a shot of my survivor car's dash. I am the third owner, and I have spoken at length with both former owners...and seen "day one" pictures of the car...this is exactly how it left the factory. The dash has never been touched. As far as the finish...it's not chrome, and it's not painted silver. I've heard the term "vacuumized metal" in reference to these dashes. It's actually aluminum powder plated to the part.
Redmanf1 Nov 24th, 09, 12:33 AM When I get a chance I will get some pictures. I also have a complete original LS6 dash that only has 30600 miles.

70cko4sp Nov 24th, 09, 11:08 AM Interesting. I know the plating wasn't at all like radio knobs etc. Brion's dash hasn't been redone and it does look more like a bright aluminum than chrome.

That one is done just like my son's original 70 dash but the "chrome" on his has faded down pretty bad now.
Tod74 Jul 10th, 10, 7:33 PM WHAT EVER Happened with this? Did you sell it or what?
Big White Jul 11th, 10, 8:48 PM That one is done just like my son's original 70 dash but the "chrome" on his has faded down pretty bad now.
Dean has a very good observation here. The original bright vacuum plating that was used on many of the dashes (not only GM, but the Big Three in general) have a tendency to "dull down" over the last 40 years or so to the point where it looks more like silver paint than what originally looked like chrome. Many people are fooled by this and swear that both vacuum plating and silver paint were used on dash carriers. For those of us who are old enough to remember what it was like "back in the day", silver paint on dash boards just wasn't an option.
Big White Jul 11th, 10, 9:35 PM Interesting. I know the plating wasn't at all like radio knobs etc. Brion's dash hasn't been redone and it does look more like a bright aluminum than chrome.
Jim,
I can't imagine manufacturers using different specifications for vacuum plating plastic parts depending upon what the part was. Bottom line, dash carriers, radio knobs, arm rests, etc., would have been vacuum plated to the same specifications so that everything in the interior matched. I haven't seen the Brion dash that you allude to, but keep in mind that you are looking at a finish that is 40 years old. Don't expect it to look brand new.
