Im in the process of putting the brake pedal back on my 72 Chevelle frame off resto. The bracket is already installed on the car. I'm starting to think this would have been an easier job putting the the pedal and retainer pin back onto the bracket when it was off the car. anybody ever do it the hard way like I am? I guess the trick would be to grease up the retainer pin pretty good and start bangin?
Any input would be great.

Yes, it would have been easier then. Did you test-fit it while it was all out?
I had to do some cleaning w/ fine sanding pad to get mine to work smoothly. There are a couple of nylon bushings that need to be installed in the bracket before the pin is re-installed, too.
Clean everything up where the pin will insert with minimal effort, then the job will go pretty easy.
I traded a fellow member my A/T brake pedal for his 4 speed pedals.
I was able to do the swap under the dash in about 20 min.

Thanks for the advise. That's kind of how I do things the first time... ass backwards! I started putting the pin in and it wasn't going very smoothly. I'll clean everything up a little better than I did the first time and try again.

After replacing the 2 plastic inserts, taking some steel wool to the retainer pin and greasing everything up, I got it put back together. All it took was a little extra time to clean everything up.

Mine was so gummed/corroded/rusted it would barely move! I put a bunch of penetrating oil on it and I finally got it to move some, but still was very tough, and wouldn't come back up.
I pulled the whole dash out, de-rusted with phosphoric acid, use a scotch brite pad, and some lithium grease.
The original A/T pedal got the treatment too, before I swapped it into my friend's el Camino.
It all turned out very nice - going to be fun going thru the gears!
