: improving bone stock suspension on 69 Chevelle

my 69 Chevelle has what appears to be a bone-stock suspension set-up. although i have gotten used to it driving it for the past week or so... it is still really "boaty"...

should it have shocks in it? all it seems to have are heavy duty coil springs with like little rubber stoppers in them to keep them from compressing too far... this seems kinda... hmmm... prehistoric.

can i just add shocks to the existing springs? that is... are there mounting/attachment points pre-existing?

i would also like to re-do the front and add sway-bars as well... so i was thinking a kit like this:

http://www.performancesuspension.com/gmachStageI.htm

i would go for the Stage II ... would that work with the pre-exsiting springs? or should i get the Stage III instead? any other suggestions from other places vs. this company?

i was also planning was a quick ratio steering box. the current PS box is like 4.75 (or so) turns to lock. i'd like something in the area of 3.5 (like my WRX)... would this be a doable solution here?

this particular auction has ended... but the place still has them for sale.

thanks!

Yes a chevelle should have shocks, it should also have a sway bar, at least up front, if it doesnt there is a problem ,it should also have the holes for them. graemlins/beers.gif

i didn't look up front and it's too dark now... but for sure it has no shocks in the rear... just big coil springs and the stoppers... it looked like it had space for shocks... i just wasn't sure the 'spots' were actually for real... i'll get that fixed right away then.

Without rear shock absorbers installed, the rear springs have nothing to prevent them from completely falling out when the suspension is un-loaded. Think about it, a 4-link suspension with coil springs, and the shocks are meant to limit suspension travel downward. Without them....OH BOY!

Damn, those kits are expensive. Are you sure you can't find that someplace cheaper?

this is just the first place i found with a full re-do kit. anybody know of any others? the kybs i've seen for around $45 a piece (x4) = $180 ... then the sway bars i've seen for $135 a piece with bushings... so thats $270... $450 total... haven't look around for front-end rebuild kits... but it seems to add up just about right at $609 for the kit.

I bought most of the stuff for my Nova from www.p-s-t.com (http://www.p-s-t.com) and was real happy with them. All parts are name brand, good quality stuff, the front sway bar was good quality and fit perfect and the parts all fit great! They also seemed to have the best pricing on things like KYB's and such.

Good luck,
Bill C.

I bought my KYB's from summit for $27 each. Havent put them in yet, but they should be a huge improvement over my 20 year old sears shocks.
