: 1967 Steering Shaft Question

I have a 67 big block Chevelle with a non tilt column and manual floor shift. I'm rebuilding the original column and want to replace the steering shaft. After some searching here I understand that the 67 big block requires a one-piece collapsible shaft with removable rag-joint flange. I'm not having much luck locating one and I'm wondering if there are other years/models that I can look at for a donor shaft.

Thanks!

The 1967 A-car steering column was a one year design. I do not know of any other years or models that would interchange steering shafts with it.

I think, THINK, 68 is the same as 67; at least the exploded views in the parts book show them to be. When you say "steering shaft" exactly what part are you referring to?

Shop manual blowup pics not withstanding, I believe that all of the 1968 A-cars had separate intermediate steering shafts with a pot coupling at the column connection just outside in the engine compartment near the dash panel.

The 1967 A-cars all had one long steering shaft that stretched from the dash to the flex coupling on the gear. All of the early 1967's were campaigned to install new lower bearings and to replace the steering shafts.

The 1968 Chevrolet shop manual is notorious for having a hodge-podge of 1967 pictures and writeups that were not accurate for the 1968 model year.

There is a chance that a complete 1968 steering shaft, 1968 lower bearing and the correct intermediate steering shaft could be swapped into a 1967 column. I just don't have any technical information that says that it could or could not be done.

i think finding a whole column for parts would be the direction to look for. maybe a little more $$$ but you would end up with other parts if necessary. shafts that have already been removed are hard to find, i agree.

Not sure how much $ is too much but I bought a completely rebuilt '67 SS column non-tilt floor shift from Garys Classics actually off eBay. Talked to him on phone - this is one of their main businesses - rebuilding columns. They have one on eBay now for $369.

Here's the link:

I couldn't be more pleased with mine. Further, it was professionally packaged and shipped promptly. Hope that helps.

You guys are amazing. Thanks to everyone for their assistance on this! It really helped me focus on what I needed and how to get there. I called Gary's and was able to get the correct 67 shaft from them and I picked up the lower bearing conversion while I was at it. That means I won't be chasing 1/8" loose ball bearings around the garage floor ever again!

Do you have an eMail address for Gary's. It is great that he was able to supply a steering shaft. Those type of steering column parts (steering shafts, jackets, etc) are extremely hard to come by.

Does Gary have a website?

Here's the email info Gary gave me: gc75751 at hughes dot net He doesn't have a website but he has an ebay store and his user ID is 69RSZ. The steering shaft arrived today and it looks good. Media blasted and painted, arrived in 4 days via ground delivery. My experience has been good so far. There was a misunderstanding and he thought I already had a flange so he didn't include one. I called him and he offered to send one out today at no charge. He's a business owner that stands by his product. Getting harder to find that type of guy.
