: accelerator cable adjustment
hatchet Nov 17th, 09, 2:49 PM Is there anyway to remove some of the play the accelerator pedal has in it. It has too much travel before it starts to actually pull the accelerator cable. The stop on the end of the cable at the pedal seems to be pressed on and not adjustable. With the pedal to the floor the cable has not pulled the carburetor arm it's full travel length. Thanks for any help.
Lilracr Nov 17th, 09, 2:54 PM You must have either changed the cable mount off the carb, or the carb lever has changed. The cables don't really stretch, if they do they will frey and create a sticking cable.
I fyou move the mounting location further back away from the carb it should raise the pedal inside and give added carb lever movement.
You could also mount the cable closer to the throttle blade shaft and that will reduce the amount the cable needs to travel. But the throttle could get a little more touchy.
Hope this helps some.
ss1970chev454 Nov 17th, 09, 6:14 PM I've thought about this before I went with the Lokar setup. How about a split shot lead sinker?
hatchet Nov 17th, 09, 10:41 PM Thanks for the replies guys. I also thought about the split lead sinker. What I think I'm going to end up doing is making a cable stop like the type they use on bicycle brake cables. I'll make it horseshoe shape to fit over the cable with a screw in the tong/fork to tighten the stop onto the cable. It should work. Bobby, I did change to an Edelbrock carburetor. Thanks again.

hatchet Nov 18th, 09, 7:20 PM 70 chevelle 454 w/Edelbrock 650 carb.
Lilracr Nov 19th, 09, 9:23 AM Be careful on what you make as a stop, you don't want to frey the cable.
maxhunter Nov 19th, 09, 12:16 PM I have installed several Edelbrock carbs and ran into the same thing. I typically buy the throttle cable bracket that has the slots in them, that makes them adjustable. I think Spectre or something like similar is the name on them...AutoZone usually has them.
They mount to the right rear carb bolt, they are 2 pieces bolted together so you can adjust the section that has the cable mounting hole in it rearward, to take out some of the slack.
I believe the lever placement is a little different when you go to the Edlebrock carbs.
huffhuff Nov 19th, 09, 1:02 PM zip tie(s) as spacer at the pedal.
surmin69 Nov 19th, 09, 6:21 PM On my 69 I had the same problem, I removed the gas pedal assembly and bent the steel bar, It seams that over the years It just slowly bent forward. after this the carb opened up to the full extent of its travel.
Just a thought. try It
I also thought about the sinkers on the cable, this worked much better.
