: Driveline Hits Trans Tunnel!!!!

I took my first ride down the street with a passenger in the car, from the added weight the drive line is rubbing on the tunnel just behind the front u-joint. I have driven the car a few times before and no rubbing and after my son got out this evening I took it down the street again with no rubbing.

We used Hotckiss rear bars with adjustable uppers and went to a 275-60 15 tire. We also used Energy Suspension Trans mount, mount was taller than stock type mount putting driveline higher in the tunnel. Its a 66 Chevelle with a 454 Muncie M-21.
Can adjustment be made on the pinion angle to help this problem. Has anyone experienced this problem? Also car was lowered by cutting one coil of the rear springs.

Rick,

Your interference issue has nothing to do with the suspension components you used or pinion angle. It is strictly a function of the relationship of the trans yoke/crossmember to the floorpan brace. Having a taller Energy Suspension trans mount decreases the clearance and adding another passenger will cause the floor pan to "sag" enough to cause this problem. I've seen it numerous times and is especially prone to happening when using the larger 1330 or 1350 U-joints. The easiest fix is to cut and reweld the transmission mount on the crossmember about 1/2" lower. You might also check the condition of the body mounts. If the rubber is at all deteriorated the body will sit lower on the frame causing similar symptoms.
