: Disc brake conversion
vs69chevelle Nov 16th, 09, 7:43 PM I want to convert my front drums to disc's. There are so many different companies that supply these kits anyone have a particular kit they suggest. Or even better some combos to build my own kit. I know where to get the spindles but what about the rotors, calipers, brackets and proportioning valve.
hwysong1 Nov 16th, 09, 8:21 PM I'm doing my 67 as we speak. Rebuilding the front and doing the disk converson. I had the same problem looking for a kit, as everyone has one. I read an article in Chevy High Performance, they used a kit from "Pirate Jacks" so went that rought. Kit has everything, good looking parts, I'm happy with it.
Smittie Nov 16th, 09, 10:53 PM Lots of info here on this, search the forums and also the tech section. It also depends on what you want. If you are going stock power front disc drum rear, then the kits are great, everything included you need to complete the project including the spindles calipers, etc. If you have a vendor in your area then I would suggest picking up the kit so you can discuss the parts with the vendor and make sure you got them all. Even if you are going for a stronger aftermarket type setup the kits have been well discussed here.
As long as you are at it, might as well get the front end rebuild kit as well, get it done while you have it all apart.
jonathanch Nov 16th, 09, 11:03 PM I used CPP and was very pleased. Everything was there and very good instructions.

Same here no complaints and now it stops like a new car.
vs69chevelle Nov 17th, 09, 11:12 AM I've looked at the CPP kits they look pretty nice. Elviss 1971 and jonathanch did you do just the front conversions and get good stopping power?
ProdigyCustoms Nov 17th, 09, 11:58 AM We have these systems by the Right Stuff in stock for $500. Very nice stuff and you get your choice of boosters

maxhunter Nov 17th, 09, 5:19 PM Put a CPP kit on sons 70 El Camino, unfortuneatly right after he rear ended a very nice gentleman in a pick up truck. We had just rebuilt the non powered drum brakes all around.
Went with the front disc (power) conversion kit with 9" booster.
Bought the complete kit with stock height spindles etc. Now it doesn't drive like the same car (fortuneatley!) It stops very nicely.
The only problem we had with the install was the exsisting push rod was about 3/4" too short. I welded on extensions to the yoke and all is well.
This car had been pieced together with who knows what, so I can't say if the push rod was even for the Elky.

I did mine about 2 years ago, yes it stops very well and the kit went together with no troubles. Really no comparison to how it was with drums and after I did it I wondered how come I waited so long.
ProdigyCustoms Nov 17th, 09, 7:20 PM Just thought I would throw a couple more options out here.

64elkynss Nov 18th, 09, 1:58 PM just make sure you get the correct brackets for where the hard brake line meets the soft brake line. Those brackets are different for drum brakes. 64elkynss
