It's not mine, it's a customer's car. Last week I rebuilt the front end and added Wilwood discs, the week before we hung the Currie 9" with disc brakes and adjustable upper arms--today we got the Smeding 690 h.p. 572" crate motor and Tremec 6 spd. in place, the Lemon's headers fit very well (first big block headers I've seen without a single dimple hammered into them). Installing the engine/trans as a unit was made more difficult by the kickouts on the Moroso pan that hit the crossmember at the same time the bellhousing hit the floor--a little more trans tunnel sugery and it all fell into place! bowtie0069 Nov 17th, 09, 9:02 AM nice setup!
Ya, he's got more money in the rearend than I do in my entire car!
thenewpappa Nov 18th, 09, 2:05 PM WIth all this HP, why nog spend some bucks on front suspension updates? (besides the wilwoods...)

The owner is 70 years old, it'll probably never see half throttle, and he is on a budget! He told us today to use the stock fuel line from the tank to the cheap chrome mechanical fuel pump.

Please ask him to trade the engine with my 396/350, then he can go full throttle with the half the HP of his 572 :)

Why does that make me want to stab myself in the eye?
bowtie0069 Nov 19th, 09, 10:58 AM Why does that make me want to stab myself in the eye?
Same reason I want to!
We found out yesterday he had set a $4000 budget to have all the parts added to the car. During the installation we found some rusted floorpan areas that needed repair. We didn't charge him to hang the rearend, but the budget is almost spent and now he's going cheapo after the $13,000 engine, almost $4000 for the Currie rear, whatever the 6 spd. cost, etc....
Maybe we can buy it back from his wife in a couple years and do it right!
He's a nice guy, I just think he didn't include enough items in his plans.
rak1 Nov 19th, 09, 11:35 AM I have the same rear end setup in my Camino: Currie +9 N housing $1275+Posi 3:75 $1295+Currie rear disc brakes $900+ adj arms $400+ fun of going fast= PRICELESS!!!!
70 ELK Nov 19th, 09, 5:32 PM I turned 60 a few months ago, and am about to put a Dart SHP 400 c.i. small block, AFR 180's, and TKO-500 in mine, with a Moser or Tom's 3.08 12-bolt in the Camino I bought new 40 years ago. I want to drive mine all over the US like I did many times in the past, so am building it for torque, and mileage. Would use a TPI in that regard, but will probably stick with a Quadrajet for originality.
Probably will use the SC&C AFX package in front, if the ATS spindles appear to be realistically available. Would really appreciate y'all's suggestions on brakes; am considering Wilwood and Baer, as am concerned with the caliper to spoke clearance problems with Z06 brakes.

In my Nova I run a Moser 12 bolt--4.30's, spool, 33 spline axles, big bearing ends, 5/8" drive studs, aluminum cover, .250" wall tubes.......FREE!!
It's good to have friends in the magazine business.
I have a fresh, never run 10 bolt for my 67 El Camino with all new axles, posi, gears, etc.....BUT it's an early 8.2" I guess when I go to the track with the 500+ h.p. 383, I'll run it on street tires!

I drove my 14.5-1 406", with a 283° at .050 solid roller cam from Los Angeles to Nashville using an 8" 6000 rpm converter and 3.73 gears---got 10.5-11 MPG which surprised the hell out of me. Car ran high 10's at the time; it's faster now with a much milder combo.

My Camino still has its original 2.56, 10-bolt. Is that worth rebuilding or using like it is? Always assumed I would have to rebuild it, and thought the cost of that would not be much less than a 12-bolt. It will always have street tires and never see the inside of a track.

Thanks for that info, which is really encouraging! I was planning to use a HR cam, with no more than 220 duration at .050, and 110 LSA. With a 3.08 rear and O.D., I should get decent mileage. Would do even better if it could pull the existing 2.56 rear, but think that would be too much for the O.D.?
ss396boy Nov 20th, 09, 1:05 PM I had that same issue with that damn Moroso pan w/ trans attached. Good thing the front end was off. Nice ride too!

He should have just put a 350 in it then. ;)

That's what we removed.
Jerry Briggs Dec 9th, 09, 11:32 PM You do nice work Mike!
bdc1013 Dec 10th, 09, 2:24 AM what about that cross memeber too... could use a geforce jobber to fit the large exhuast that things going to need. better put in a hydro clutch too or ol gramps is going to need a knee replacement after a few rides l:)
OLDED Dec 10th, 09, 9:56 AM Just cause we go past 60 doesn't mean we can't go past the kids! The owner probably has a real tire budget to work from. The SS check comes every month to buy a new set of rears. He'll live longer doing this than getting in trouble from an irate husband next door - keeps him out of trouble.
bowtie0069 Dec 10th, 09, 11:42 PM You do nice work Mike!
Thanks, but it's pretty much just bolting parts on the car. My buddy in the shop nextdoor is the one hired to do the job, but he's a VW/Porsche guy (9 sec. turbo Bug) He comes to me for help with domestic car stuff. We have to keep re-doing or un-doing things the owner wants done; He wanted to run a short water pump for more room, but none of the pieces he bought would fit with the Dart block (missing some holes) and the AFR heads (water pump hits the heads where the protrude beyond the deck surface) and some other fit issues we ran into. Got the pieces to go back with a long pump and the upper bracket had to be modified to clear the intake, shimming and spacers were needed to get the alternator to line up with the chrome Chinese pulleys..........here is where we left off today:
