I have a '64 muncie M20 in my 78 pickup. Im almost finished with my 388 for it [11:1, vortec heads, big solid flat tappet cam] that should be in the 400ish hp range. The muncie is almost dead and in need of a rebuild again. This time I plan on using a supercase, iron mid plate and rebuild kit from 5speeds.com. I eventually plan on bolting some slicks on and going to the 1/4mile drags. Will the muncie hold up or am I wasting my money ands going to blow it up again?

My M20 lives just fine behind my 385 but I don't dare bolt on slicks as I am sure I will trash it!! lol If your going slicks i would go automatic unless you want to spend some money on a purpose built manual tranny, clutch and scatter shield setup.

The supercase and iron midplate are the two best upgrades you can do to the the Muncie. The trans should hold up fine. Any trans can be "blown-up" with enough abuse. Stick with the stick, autos are for wusses.

If you change the case and mid plate, how would the original gears hold up.Just wonderin',I'm in the same dilema.

Hard to say, the gears are nearly ready to join AARP!!!
Most of the failures are caused by case flex so you will cure that with a super case. The gears are tough but they can fail, normally first or fourth will go.

street tires... you'll be good.
Slicks............ best way to expose the weekest links in the drive train. BUT with 400 hp, you should be o.k,

Pickups are way heavier than a chevelle so be nice to that trans even on street tires. I bet it weighs close or more than 4000 pounds.
