: Not a Chevelle but a 1969 Pontiac GP SJ428
Berto Nov 15th, 09, 12:56 PM I sold this car to a friend back in 91 and since then he has had it repainted and done some minor interior work. It is dark green with white interior. All Original, numbers matching 428 with T400 with the big beefy posi rear end. Buckets with a console, factory tach mechanical gauges, still runs great 120k on the engine. Its never been rebuilt, but I did have a valve job done with it was at 75k. It has been garaged since I sold it to him, there are a few minor issues such as the front bumper has a dent in it right in the center, but the car is clean.
Well he called me and told me he would sell it to me for what I sold it to him for back in 91, $2500. I know the book value on this car has to be more than that, my initial browsing about the car would gauge the value between $7500 and up depending on condition. I do not have any picture at this time, going to take the keys from him for a week or two to let the wife drive it and make sure I don't get crucified for jumping on a poncho. I loved the car back then, great cruiser but not sure that I wouldn't flip it if the right opportunity came along.
Opinions?
Johnny Nov 15th, 09, 1:53 PM You know you friend better than anyone, if you decide to resell it he may get mad thinking he was being nice selling it back to you for what you sold it to him for thinking you are going to keep it, then you resell it and make 5000.00.

thats very true. he was trying to get me to buy it last year at $4000 and I told him I had other projects and couldn't lose my focus on another car. I suppose I should warn him that I might drive it for a while and flip it in the spring if an opportunity presents itself. To be honest, I don't know why he is not trying to advertise it on sites such as this but for Pontiacs. I think $2500 is giving it away.
Keith Tedford Nov 15th, 09, 3:53 PM You could always split the profit with him down the road if you sold the car. Or, you could tell him right up front that you really don't need the car and that you might sell it at some time in the future. Friends are friends.
1BLACKHARLEY Nov 15th, 09, 4:08 PM look.. if he's decided to basically give the car away, who do you want to be the recipitent. do you want to be the guy with 5k in his pocket, or listen to him bitch, about somebody else making the $.
if you sell the car, you can take him out to a great dinner. he set the price, you answered an oppritunity...
furball8994 Nov 15th, 09, 4:11 PM Nothing wrong with giving him what he's asking. Your not buying it to flip, So if you do sell it in the future and make a profit, There's nothing wrong with that.
Berto Nov 15th, 09, 4:18 PM i tend to agree that I should just let him know what my intentions are and he has set the price. The next issue is how to fit that monster in my garage, I think that thing was the longest production vehicle in 69. lol
fishhead Nov 15th, 09, 4:26 PM When was the last time you seen it?
Berto Nov 15th, 09, 4:33 PM I saw it last year when he was trying to get me to buy it at 4k. It is dent free, the body work and paint is ok, not show by any means but acceptable for a driver. You see the typical waves and dishes that a 40 year old car will have. A bit of shrinkage and sand scratches can be seen from what I recall. The back bumper is straight, the front bumper needs to have someone pull the dinger out of the center and be rechromed. All the rest, rocker panel trim, emblems door handles etc are there and look good. He had the front seats recovered in white vinyl. It looks pretty good. door panels are straight, the dash is perfect, AC blows ice cold. He had a stereo put in and they put speakers in the door panels and a deck in the dash, (that kills me I hate stuff being cut) but what can ya do about that. The glass is all original except for the front window. Has the factory rims with stock size tires. All the engine bolt ons are still there, from the factory air cleaner radiator etc, the car has never been molested. I am pondering whether or not there is a build sheet to be found in this.
Dean Nov 15th, 09, 4:44 PM Since it's a friend, I think if it were me, I would just tell him beforehand "Look, the car will probably bring more than that and I might just re-sell it for a profit."
These kind of deals sure can end a good relationship.

Yes i tend to think that this is the correct path to take. Let him know that he could get more money for it if he was willing to properly market it.
memorycamino Nov 15th, 09, 5:39 PM Back in 1979 I was trying SO hard to buy a 1966 Tempest Ragtop.
All my friends knew about it, and how badly I wanted it.
The guy just wouldn't sell...
Well, one weekend my buddy went over and asked the guy, and it must have been the right time, cause he got the car for some CRAZY low number, and then flipped it.
I didn't talk to him for almost 30 years.
I would still be driving that car today.
He knew I wanted it, I had been on it for over a year, saw it and asked first, staked my "claim" among those around me, and he bought from under me.
Not the same thing you have going on here, but guys can get a little bent over their cars.
mr 4 speed Nov 15th, 09, 7:12 PM For $2500 it wouldn't hurt to keep it....
I love those cars..I actually knew a kid that had a 428/4 speed 69 GP

yea a friend of mine is a pontiac guy and he recomends getting it and setting it up as a 4 speed. I drove this car all through college and had tons of fun with it. I missed it after I sold it and am quite sure I will fall in love with it again

A "buddy" of mine did the same thing to me on a '65 Olds 442 back in '69.
He was standing right there with me when I put a $200.00 DP on it to hold it to Saturday A.M. (this was a Wednesday night).
Saturday comes, and I show up with the remaining $1200.00 The dealer sold it to my "buddy" Friday night when he showed up with $1400.00 cash in his hand. The dealer handed me back my $200.00.
Of course, my "buddy" totalled it out street racing it less than a month later.
I haven't spoken to him since then (1969).

ak 67SD Nov 16th, 09, 6:50 PM ...another option would be to give him $3000.... you'll do just fine on the car, i'd just say, "you're asking $2500, but i know you've done some work, so i'm tossing in another $500"....your friend should appreciate the goodwill gesture and you are conscience free to do what you want... you made him happy, acted in good faith and then some... i think you both win with that one...

IMO this is the fair thing to do, yes he enjoyed the car for quite awhile after doing some work to it, BUT you know it's worth more and I bet he does too. It sounds like he is treating you as a good friend and selling it for what he paid.
