I just replaced my master cylinder in my 71 chevelle. I have manual brakes with drums all the way around. After I installed the cylinder and after I bled all the lines I still have to pump the brakes up like crazy. I was wondering if I had bled the lines wrong or somthing. I started with the front driver side and then to the front passenger side and work my way around the car. When I bled the front they didn't shoot out as far as the back ones did. I'm wondering if I should replace the rubber brake hose for the front. I don't what I did. Could someone please help me out here!!

Did you bench bleed the MC? You also bled the brakes in the wrong order. Begin at the corner furthest from the driver and proceed in order toward the driver. (Right rear, left rear, right front, left front.)

by bench bleed I guess you mean bleeding the mc while the lines aren't hooked up to them. And no I didn't. couldn't anything other than that be the problem?

Just a long shot but when I replaced my master I had to install 2 10lb residual valves in the brake lines. Without them it had about the same problems as yours. Once installed it worked like a charm.

66 Not bench bleeding MC likely caused excess air into the lines? You may have to bleed several times to get all the air out.Pay attention while bleeding and watch/listen for air pockets! If pedel does not come up after getting air out post again and someone will help you along. DANO

I have 4wheel manual and have experienced that same thing, keep bleeding. I have tried pressure, gravity, and rev bleeding. The best way is to just get a buddy in the vehicle and "pump it up"

so what I should do is just pump them up and then loosen the bleed valve and then screw them back in for each line, each time? I wen back and got another mc free of charge to see if it was it and I bench bleeded this one and I put it in and it did the same thing. Now I haven't bleeded all of the lines yet but, I was just seein if anybody could help me out with a few more pointers. And trust me I know how to bleed lines. Also what is a 10lb risidual line?

66 Did you get someone to pump them up and hold pedal down while bleeding...like dennis68 suggested?...closing bleeder before pedal is released back up each time...And yes to your first question...possibly several times for each wheel cylinder,it can get very messy also!Good luck.

See the time before I just had my brother just push the brakes down when I opened the bleeder and he would hold them there and I would close the bleeder. I didn't know you were suppose to pump them up before you loosened the valve. I'm going to try that tomorrow with a buddy of mine. Oh, did anyone find anything on a risidual valve?
