: What was the base 396 engine in 70 SS Chevelle
droptop396 Nov 14th, 09, 7:52 PM Which 396 Engine was the base for the1970 Chevelle Super Sport?
Meaning which engine did you get as the base motor before checking off boxes on the order sheet for the higher horse 396 or 454 engines?

Mike Nov 14th, 09, 9:02 PM I'm aware of where it is in the link I posted but asking why it's not the base engine.
Bart's showing L34 as is Dave's ad.
danvil1 Nov 14th, 09, 9:06 PM in 1970 the L34 396 402 cubic inch 350 hp was the base motor for the "Super Sport SS". there were 3 other motors for the Super Sport >>> L78 396 375 hp, LS5 454 360 hp and the king LS6 454 450 hp.
the LS3 396 (402 cubic inches) was an optional big block motor for the malibu with no "SS" package,
a malibu with a LS3 330 hp motor is a pretty rare find especially if it had a 4 speed trans. i have only seen one in person and it is a pretty cool set up.
kind of like a sleeper:thumbsup:
so in 1970 there were a total of 5 different big blocks.what a killer year!!!

:clonk: my bad
The big news for 1970 was that the L34 became the base engine for the Super Sport.
The LS3 was just an optional motor for non-SS cars
droptop396 Nov 14th, 09, 9:31 PM What is the difference between the LS3 33OHP and the L34 350HP? Camshaft?

my neighbor has one. but sadly when he bought the car the original drive line was missing and when he restored it he never bought it back like original. he just mad a hot rod out of it with a 350 and a auto. but it was a real 400 malibu 4 speed car:beers:

Yes, major differences were cam, valve springs, and air cleaner. The LS3 was equivalent to the '69 L35, 325 hp 396, but with 402 cubes. Also had the '70 flat intake manifold like the '70 L34. it was strange they raised the hp rating to 330 and changed RPO to LS3 but left the L34 rating at 350.

Thats because they knew the LS5 was coming on line with 360 horsepower...

But why didn't they designate the '70 L34 with 402 cubes and flat intake the LS4?:)
Dave Birdwell Nov 16th, 09, 7:43 PM Because they already had the LS4 345hp 454 for the Impalas.... ;)

My thinking would be. With all else the same, Adding 6ci. added 5hp. As for the RPO. That engine went into Chevelle 400's. You couldn't very well have the same RPO engine in a SS396 and a Chevelle 400!!!
droptop396 Nov 16th, 09, 8:42 PM Good information.
Thanks.
