Does anyone know offhand, if the rubber insulators that the rear coil springs are for the top of the spring, bottom or both. A guy I know is assembling a 70 chevelle, he thinks they go on the bottom of the spring. I don't remember them there, I thought they went on the top. Any thoughts???????

I was told they go on the top. I haven't replaced my springs yet and don't know 100%. But i do know you only need a pair and they don't go on the bottom & top.
I am 99% sure its the top. I guess if he is pulling it apart there might be some reminants left from the originals.

I've seen the remains of some. What was their intended benefit?

Maybe just to prevent metal to metal contact and wear.
Just replaced mine over the winter on my '70(along with the springs)
They definitely go on top. Their purpose, as I understand it, is to prevent metal to metal contact and minimize the chances for rust to form at the contact points.
