: Moog tierod ends...
Tim67 Mar 17th, 04, 10:25 AM Hi,
Just wondering if there is a difference betweene the inner and out tierod ends from Moog for a 67 Chevelle. They look exactly the same yet they have different prices and part numbers. Im in the middle of putting them on the car, but cant tell whats what after I got them out of the packages  Don’t want to put them on backwards!
Thanks
Tim
BillsCamino Mar 17th, 04, 10:41 AM Isn't one left hand threaded and the other right hand?
Tim67 Mar 17th, 04, 10:58 AM This is tru, but there all out of the packages and I dont know which is which, inner and outer, Regardless of threads. If I knew what one was the left or right handed threads then Id know whats inner/outer.
It was also 2am in the morning when I was going to attemp to get them in, maybe anohter look at them when I get home from work will help tongue.gif

BillsCamino Mar 17th, 04, 4:10 PM If I remember correctly, right hand threaded tierods are outers, leftys are inners.
Tom's 68 Mar 17th, 04, 5:03 PM somebody once said to remember right out in left field
stupid saying but it always stuck
and is supposedly the same on most
as with the chevelles right outer and left inner
71350SS Mar 18th, 04, 1:02 AM Tim,
The inners have the grease fitting on the body of the tie rod so it points to the center of the car.The outer tie rods have the grease fitting on the end cap so it points to the ground. They are made this way so the fittings don't hit the oil pan.
Tim67 Mar 18th, 04, 2:28 AM All 4 of them have the fittings on the bottom.
Just ran into a problem. The new Moog idler arm doesn’t fit onto the new center link (oem link). The tapered hole is not even close to being the correct size, way to small. Any ideas on this? I need this car on the road by the end of the day tomorrow. Was thinking of taking it to a machine shop or something in the morning to see if they can drill a tapered hole to match the old idler arms hole, or just reuse the old one :( . But then that means Id have to align it twice, once I get the replacement from Moog, right?
 always something!

71350SS Mar 18th, 04, 2:49 AM Thats weird,Moog tie rods used to have the fittings set up like O.E. Make sure when you install them they don,t contact the oil pan.
See if your old idler arm fits the new center link. One of those parts may be wrong for your application.I,ve seen the wrong part in the right box more than once before.
Tim67 Mar 18th, 04, 11:46 AM The old one does fit. Centerlink is good to go, its that darn idler arm. You would laugh if you could see the size of the hole. Arg!
71350SS Mar 18th, 04, 11:22 PM You might want to double check all your parts against the old ones,if they screwed up the idler arm maybe the tie rods are wrong also. Its possible that you got some full size chevy parts instead of chevelle parts.

I just bought a full Moog replacement set for my 67 from Classic Muscle(Modern Chevrolet)and all of the grease fittings are on the bottom on the tie rod ends.
67-468 Mar 19th, 04, 12:12 PM I think malibu and ss are two different sizes.and the r/h threads are the outers.
71350SS Mar 20th, 04, 1:14 AM There is no difference in the steering linkage between Malibu and ss models.
rocks66ss Mar 20th, 04, 9:16 AM The right hand threads go to the outside!!!
In the for what it's worth department, it doesen't matter if you put right hand out, or right hand in, just as long as you do both sides the same. The car doesn't mind, it still functions the same.
I replaced my front end last winter, and both inners and outers have the fittings on the bottom. it make it very inconvenient to greese the inners,I have to turn the steering all the way one side or the other and run my greese gun hose over the top of the lower control arm to access the zerks.
Also on the passenger side, the greese zerk clears the frame by aprox an 1/8 inch maybe less, but it clears just the same.

bhawk Mar 20th, 04, 4:52 PM concerning part numbers for moog products, if you go to www.federal-mogul.com (http://www.federal-mogul.com) website, they list moog as one of their products. You can go to vehicle application catalogue, describe your car, and it will pull up the part number and description of parts. Maybe double check your part numbers against the web site to see what you have.
7D Smith Mar 23rd, 04, 12:30 AM Ran into the same problem with the idler. The auto parts store (Car Quest) had another one sent from either a 65 or 66 & it was correct.
Cameano Mar 23rd, 04, 1:14 PM Someone might have given you an idler arm from a '64, some were for a 13/16" centerlink, some were for a 7/8" centerlink. The taper studs are different on them. You can put a wrench on it to see what it is. You should have the 7/8". Someone probably bought the wrong one for their '64, ended up returning it to the parts store in the wrong box when they got the right one. That is, if the part number turns out to be correct for your car.
