: Help with HEI power wire
Got BB? Nov 5th, 09, 9:32 AM Gentlemen...I'm upgrading my HEI and I'm going to run a new dedicated power wire from the ignition terminal on the fuse box but the previous owner already has the trans kickdown switch and the aftermarket tach hooked up there...what options do I have? can I move those items up to the ACC terminal above? Or would that not power those correctly? Any input would be greatly appreciated...Thanks.
Dean Nov 5th, 09, 11:23 AM You can connect more than two things as long as the total amperage isn't more than the fuse will allow.
Got BB? Nov 5th, 09, 11:35 AM Thanks...but can I move those to the ACC or will that not work? Sorry but I'm not very good with electrical stuff...
Robinls5 Nov 5th, 09, 12:01 PM When I installed a HEI in my 70 SS Wagon driver, I went from the fuse box. LOOK Behind the dist. location, You will see a Plastic button sticking through the firewall ( This button is pushed through from the inside to hold the inside insulation). What I did was, Cut the tip of the button off, ( just enough for the wire to fit through) Then run your HEI wire through this ( Hollow Plastic button) back to the fuse box.
It will be one less wire you are looking at under the hood AND it will be running through a plastic insulated boot.
NOTE:
I also installed a toggle switch ( inline)to KILL the power to the HEI. I use the toggle switch if I am working on something and need the IGN. switch on. It is also "your" secret kill switch.

BUBBA2711 Nov 5th, 09, 12:18 PM First disconnect the battery. I used a hei and tach conversion kit and wire wrapping tape from year one. If you trace the ignition wire back to the bulkhead connector (engine side of the fuse box connector on the lower firewall by the steering column under the master cylinder. Unscrew it from the fuse box, and turn it over. You will see a cloth covered wire that is the coil ignition power wire. Remove the wire terminal from the bulkhead connector, and plug the new one in it's place. Rewrap with wire covering. Finally plug wires in its that simple. When your done it will look stock. Maybe 45 min total start to finish.
tunes Nov 5th, 09, 1:14 PM Don't move the wires to the ACC terminal. If I remember right that terminal only has 12V when the key is in the ACC position.
Got BB? Nov 5th, 09, 2:00 PM Thanks for the info guys...I think I'll do what Ron said and just get the right wire from yearone and it will be a much cleaner install...:)

Got BB? Nov 5th, 09, 2:30 PM Its a 70...Wish I would have done a little more research on the wire...already ordered it through year one...twice the price of the link you just sent for opg...
BUBBA2711 Nov 5th, 09, 2:42 PM Sorry about that dave. Never dealt with opgi yet.
bochnak Nov 5th, 09, 2:45 PM What's $5 when the job will be done right?
What was the shipping cost?
I simply removed the coil wire from the bulkhead connector, with some careful prying, and a pc of thin metal from an windshield wiper reinforcement.
Cut the resistance wire off the connector, soldered on a new wire for the hei, and put it back in the bulkhead connector. Seems to work fine over the last year.
Got BB? Nov 5th, 09, 3:15 PM Year one gets $10 for the wire, then anonther $10 for shipping... Still not a lot of $ but probably twice what I could have paid....:(
