: Boss 338's arrived today-initial thoughts and observations
72ragtop Nov 4th, 09, 11:37 PM Well the 338's showed up today on the brown truck, really look good, I'm very happy so far. Extremely pleased to see the "MADE IN USA" cast into the back side of the spoke. As would be expected with a cast wheel, they are a little heavy, 18X8 measured 26 lbs, 18X9.5 measured 28 lbs, on my bathroom scale. Took them down to my buddy to try to get the Nitto 555's mounted, but his rim clamp machine wouldn't work (designed to be mounted from the back side). Got a lead on another guy with some sort of mega $, fancy schmancy tire machine, will try him tomorrow. Came back to the shop and started to check out the center cap possibilities, and found some interesting things. The snap in caps from ARE 200S wheels snap right in. Have a set of NOS center caps to a Z-28, same as the 71-2 Chevelle SS 15" steel wheel, just a different logo, set 1 on, looked good, but would need a slight modification to actually snap on. I didn't want to mod my NOS cap, so not 100% sure these would work, but am fairly confident a little work with a Dremel with a small cut off wheel and reshaping the 3 tabs would do the trick. Took all the measurements to fab up some custom caps in 6061 alum on the lathe, when I got another idea. Got another cap from my collection. did some looking, cutting, sanding, and was super pleased. Don't want to give the whole secret away just yet, have to wait till I get some pics with the wheels mounted on the car. Probably won't be till next week some time, weather's supposed to suck next couple days, and going to the last 2 swap meets of the season Sat and Sun. Almost forgot, tried them on a C5 brake setup I have mocked up in the vise ( GM drum spindle and iron hub, low mileage C5 rotor, caliper, and pads), 8's cleared no problem, 9.5's apppeared to need either grinding on the caliper (raised "Corvette" lettering and ribs) or probably better a small 1/8-1/4" spacer. This is due to thicker hub on 8" wheel. Only thing I'm worried about is the height of the 245-45-18 front tire, seemed quite a bit higher than the 245-45-17 I originally wanted to run, and the 235-60 15 that's on the car now. Good thing is both frt and rr wheels will be pulled in towards the center of the car from what I'm running now, so that should help. Can't wait to get them on the car.

mjdwyer23 Nov 5th, 09, 1:49 PM Looking forward to pics, I am planning to get these same wheels this winter.

mjdwyer23 Nov 10th, 09, 5:30 PM Dude, NICE! I am doing those wheels with black centers!
musclecarjohn Nov 10th, 09, 6:07 PM Smart idea to run 18's all-around,those rears look perfect and don't dwarf the fronts like when guys run a 18/20 combo, what size are those rear tires...are they a 50-series?
cs40racing Nov 10th, 09, 7:11 PM Looks hot man!
Clint44 Nov 10th, 09, 7:11 PM My 20x10 338's arrived a few weeks ago and I'm very pleased with their quality and looks.
Just need to get them installed.
ulySSes Nov 10th, 09, 8:16 PM Aye! Those look good on there. Makes me want some new shoes, but I need new tires for my daily driver first. :o
72ragtop Nov 10th, 09, 8:25 PM Tires are 245-45-18 frt and 295-45-18 rear. Rears are a perfect fit, centered in well, 2" drop springs from CPP on Ebay, but I am running a 67 Chevelle 12 bolt, little narrower. Fronts fit good, but do have a very little scraping of the plastic inner well if turning and hitting a bump at same time. Front springa are Eibach Pro's, (small block, I'm running big block, alum heads and intake, no air, so probably a wash) and Bilstien shocka all around. Thanks, Jim.
Chris R Nov 11th, 09, 8:55 PM It has that stock SS look when you see it from several feet away. I like it.
sg5492 Nov 11th, 09, 9:29 PM Nice!!
livyx Nov 23rd, 09, 8:26 PM Look great! I've had my eye on these wheels for well over a year and a half now and still haven't gotten a set. I know it won't be popular on this site but I'm strongly considering doing an 18/20 combo on mine. I think if you balance the tire sidewalk right you can make them look close in size. The thicker the sidewalk the smaller the rim will look.
Alwhite00 Nov 24th, 09, 5:41 AM Would you still have room in the rear if it was stock width?
LK
72ragtop Nov 24th, 09, 12:11 PM Yes, I do. I can get my hand between the lip and tire. Worst case, might have to trim the lip back a little. Jim.

So if you add the extra width for the original axle it's a no-go? (without trimming)
LK
72ragtop Nov 24th, 09, 12:26 PM I think they will go with the original axle, it's 1/2" wider each side than my 67 rear end. Like I say, I can get my hand between the tire sidewall and the lip. If too tight, options would be minor trimming or a smaller tire, maybe a 275 or 285 instead of the 295 I'm running. Jim.

Thanks for the info. Got any pictures from the rear? (and front)
