Hey guys, I'm looking for a little help. I'm in the process of assembling my 68 Chevelle SS build that I bought as a roller with few parts. I've installed the reverse switch on the tranny, attached the extension harness to it and that harness goes into the hole in the firewall. Now comes the problem - where do I go from here??? What do I connect in the dash to the harness? What wire colors? I'v tried to follow my wiring diagram, but can't quite understand this part. I have figured out that I think I need a neutral safety switch in this assembly also. Can someone please shed some light on this for me??

Thanks.

I'm guessing that this is a 4-speed car since you said you have a reverse light switch on the trans. There should be a 2-prong plug in the interior wiring harness with a dark green and light green wire. This is where you attach the wires from the switch. IIRC, the plug is around the steering column area.
A manual trans car doesn't have a neutral safety switch, so you won't need one.

Thanks Bill, yes the car is a 4-speed and thanks for letting me know that I don't need a neutral safety switch. I figured that there should've been some type of prong harness with the two green wires in the dash, but there isn't. Whoever had the car before I bought it did quite a bit of cutting and splicing. Where do I trace the two green wires too on the main harness so that I can tap into them?

Thanks,

I didn't remember correctly (I'm on drugs. :)). There is a wire assembly that goes from the flat plug in the dash harness to a 1" hole in the firewall. The round plug on the end of this wire assy fits into the hole and seals it. The round plug on the end of the b/u light wire harness plugs into this round plug on the engine side of the firewall. It looks like this-

That harness is available from M&H (www.wiringharness.com (http://www.wiringharness.com)) for $21, part #10665
The other end of this wire assembly plugs into a flat plug in the instrument harness with a pink and light green wire, like this-

If you have a factory assembly manual (and if you don't you need to get one http://rover.ebay.com/ar/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?mpt=1947049885&adtype=1&size=1x1&type=3&campid=5336121898&toolid=10001 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1968-CHEVROLET-CHEVELLE-FACTORY-ASSEMBLY-MANUAL_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2e96ac67bfQQitem Z200096376767QQptZMotorsQ5fManualsQ5fLiterature (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=3&campid=5336121898&toolid=10001&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Febaymotors%2F1968-CHEVROLET-CHEVELLE-FACTORY-ASSEMBLY-MANUAL_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2e96ac67bfQQitem Z200096376767QQptZMotorsQ5fManualsQ5fLiterature))
look in section 12, page C5. Sorry for misleading you.

Hey Bill, no problem about the mislead - that's how we figure things out by talking it through!! :) Anyway, you just gave me the answer I was looking for - I have the assembly manual with the wiring diagram, but the pink wire was the one that was screwing me up - I was looking for light and dark green coming from the harness. Whoever had my car cut that flat harness off, but I see where the pink and green wires are, so I think I'm good now. Thanks again for the help!!

Ok, I'm back to this again. I'm in the final assembly stages of the car and I'm testing out all the wiring. I've connected the pink and light green wires to the other harness coming from the firewall. When I turn the key on for power, the reverse lights are constantly on no matter what gear I'm in??? Any ideas on the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

I'd raise the car and operate the reverse light switch on the trans, manually, and see if the lights go off and on. See if the rod going to the switch is installed correctly, or it might just need to be adjusted.

You can also unplug the switch harness, and put a jumper wire across the pink and green wires, and see if that turns the lights on and off.

What type of adjustment is there with the rod? How do you adjust it? Can you explain a bit more about the jumper wire test across the pink and green wire? What and why does it do this?

Thanks,

The switch it self, slides a bit to adjust it. Look where the switch screws into the switch bracket. It is a slotted hole. Thats the adjustment.

All the switch does is connect the pink and green wire together, and that turns the reverse lights on. By sticking a short wire across the plug, you're actually just making the connection. The same thing the switch does.

Ok, it's been a busy couple of weeks, but I finally go to play around with this reverse switch under the car. The lights wouldn't turn off by adjusting it the way I have it, but I disconnected the rod and moved the switch around and got the light to turn off and on in various locations. Does anyone have a pic or explanation on the exact hook-up of this switch to the tranny and the rod to the reverse linkage? Not sure if I have it hooked up correctly.

Thanks,

Sent you an email of a pic from the assy manual. See if that helps.
