Looking for an OE type fan I can pull from a yard.

I was all set to go get a Taurus fan, but when I measured the distance from the radiator to the W/P pulley I only have about 3 ¾”!! I don’t know how everyone is getting these 5” fans in there. I even have the “short” water pump.

What are you 66-67 guys using for electric fans?

My core measures 20 x 18 x 3

Total radiator is 24 ½ x 18 x 3

Thanks,
Jim

I will check him out.

I'm trying to stay with something I can pull from a yard. Hoping someone has a good fan for a tight fit.

I use a Perma-cool 16" and a homemade shroud. The fan is 3 3/4" deep and flows 2950cfm. @ 10.5 amps.
FWIW,I mounted the fan off center of the W/P. I could really care less how it looks. All I know is, it's functional.

On my 66 I took out the grill and installed my fan on the outide I have a pusher A freind gave me. The fan came off a car he junked, I think it was a ford windstar van? its a single fan. The fan was to big to fit between the long water pump and becool radiator. So I mounted it on the outside and wired it up as a pusher on a temp switch. Might wanna see how much room you have between the hood latch and radiator.

A friend of mine and I are both using the twin Spal 12" electrics. We both have 66s with short water pumps. It is real close on the power steering belt but it works.

dual fan assembly

:yup:

That way, the fan motors are off to the sides instead of right in line with the WP.

As has been said. Consider a dual fan setup. This will get the fans off to the sides. This is what I did when I switched to a Meziere electric water pump. I was running the single Mark-8 fan and it was a no-go. So I switched to the dual SPAL setup. Works dandy.

There are a few different fans that the Taurus' used. There is a long motor and a short motor, and some motors had different fastening techniques to the blade. I pulled mine off of a 92 Taurus. I have mine because it is a two speed fan and thin. I tried a few but the Taurus fan was the thinnest for the size.

I use these http://i33.tinypic.com/28lzzh3.jpg the spals, but you need a 22 inch rad core for them they work very well . you can get the dimentions here http://www.srbymichael.com/manufacturers/spal/images/spaldualdimen.jpg good luck

I have a long pump in my 67 and I use dual fans but once I put them in I had to put in a bigger alt and then I smoked it and had to put in another with bigger wires
all said and done I think that I should of put a short water pump in and just moved my alt they have kits that can put the alt just about anywhere
on the highway my car runs warm but it cools down when driving in town

The Spals seem like they'd fit and are pretty popular but, man, they are a bit pricey.

Anyone know a comparable twin fan OE set up that flows enough air for me?

Rod & Wes, do you have pics of your fan set ups, what are the dimensions of your radiators?

They are $$$. But, they move some air. When mine saw a good bit of street duty, the 2nd fan would rarely kick on. They also only draw about 1/2 the current (both) that the M8 fan did, yet cooled better. Not saying this is what you need. It was just money well spent.

I agree shop around you can find them cheaper at some places than others.I have had many differant fans on my car and these did the trick

flex a light model # 410, the best fit for the orriganal size rad.

I'll see what kind of Spal deals are out there.

Anyone fit the Mark VIII fan in there ('67, BBC, short pump)? Hows that workin out?

Jim, I'm sorry I don't have a picture and the car is in the bag for the winter. I use the Griffin direct fit with two rows of 1 1/4 inch tubes. The cheapest price I saw for the Spal fans was "the fan man" in California. He has them drop shipped from Spal in Iowa.

The plastic shroud for the taurus/sable and Mk VII fans can be trimmed a bit to get 1/2" or 3/4" or so thinner.

The perfect fans for all you guys are the Dual Electric fans that come off 2000s malibu and impalas. Those things flow and blow hard. I love mine. I have two sets just incase something happens to the ones I have now. I had them for about 2years and NOT one problem with them. I think some of you guys should check those out. JMHO

The only pics I have are of it with my new 5.3L and of it out of the car, I cannot find any from the old SBC engine.

I agree with OE fans. I beleive for the price, you are not going to get a fan that moves more air. Im giong to look into those fans just for the heck of it.

Yeah Rod, I got mine from a junkyard 2002 impala and a 2000 malibu. I have the malibu fans on my car with the JEGS Aluminum Radiator (the big one) and my car stays COOL. I paid $30 each for the pair so it was $60 total for 4 fans, but you know these fans are molded together. And they fit snug up against my radiator perfectly. I think you will like them.

I'm going to go outside on my lunch break and take some measurements and I will post them. My fans sits perfectly just inside of my Jegs Radiator. This is the radiator I have.

http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/52009/10002/-1

When I say that it fits perfect, it looks like they come with the radiator, I will go out and take some pics and I will send you some if you send me an email to send them to. But I will still take some measurements for you though.

My 65 is the same. I posted a short time ago and no one replied. I am looking for something too. We need people post their fan diamensions and what they were originally from.
I will be watching this thread and if I find something I will post here.

I'm running a Be Cool aluminum rad with the twin Spal fan setup. Twin 11" if I remember correctly. BBC with March Pulleys. The fan assembly just barely fits. It's not a junkyard option but it works very well. Car runs cooler in stop and go traffic than on the highway. Can post pics later if you'd like.

The dimensions are, 25 1/2" L, 13 3/4 H, and 4" W. I measured the depth of with from the Radiator to the back of the fan motors. I have the pictures but I dont know how to post them on here.

im using a 16 inch zirgo fan, you can buy them on their website, on ebay, but my local speed shop had them. it flows 2950 cfm, and it was about 90 bucks i think great fan, i have only had to replace it once and thats because i had the front end on the 'velle re-arranged un-voluntarily ...ooops

I think my struggle in finding a fan lies in the fact that I have a radiator with the tanks on the side. '67 and prior came with the tanks on the top and bottom which allowed for a wider core thus more options for these OE electric fan swaps.

With the tanks on the side I'm limited to a 20" core width. I am having a hard time finding a fan/shroud combo that will fit inside my 20w x 18h core area.

Under 4" depth is definately tough for a single fan setup. I like Flex-a-lite so I looked at summit and the only thing I could find that flowed decent cfm doesnt come shrouded. Definately want to have your rad at least 90% shrouded. Shrouds are easy enough to make with sheets of aluminum mind you!
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FLX-118/?image=large

For a dual setup summit has this... It would fit 1 3/4" over each tank but if your fins are flush with the tanks it shouldnt be a problem http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G4852/?image=large

As a follow up to my search, I found a set up that I am very happy with so far. (Haven't run the car, prob. won't till Spring.)

Radiator:
I ended up getting a new radiator that has the correct (top & bottom) tank placement for 66-67. This allowed me to have a core dimension of 24x16. Very nice aluminum unit with 2 row design. -1" wide tubes. It’s identical to my current radiator but everything is vertical. $219.

Fan:
After a few weeks of searching out OEM fans, I found one that fits perfectly. It's a 2000 Ford Contour fan. (24.2" x 15.8" x 3.3") Dorman Part # 620-104. Fan looks at fits great. And I got it brand new for $100!!

This winter, I will wire it up with a thermo switch on the intake (185* on, 175* off) and also have a manual switch to turn it on and off as I please.

Don't know when I will test it, maybe not till Spring. I will post results.

It just so happens, the mounting tabs on the fan line up pretty good with the brackets on the radiator. I may have some very minor trimming and a couple holes to drill.

I moved the fan over so you can see the brackets...
