I see that there is a '65 L79 car listed on fleabay, Or at least it is listed as such... however there is a glaring error as the coil is mounted on the firewall... well I asked this question to the poster: "Nice car and it looks great, but I am wondering WHY the coil is mounted on the firewall when it should be in a special bracket down on the right side of the intake??"

Here is the reply I got today: "The bracket on the intake is for a cast iron intake on a 283 or low HP 327. The L-79 has a factory aluminum intake and mounts the coil on the firewall. Thanks".

I'm not so sure this is a "true" L79 car now and I know there are alot of "fake/clones" out there~ Am I wrong in thinking that the L79 coil bracket for a '65 is a special made one and mounts to the right side of the intake and supported by a carb stud?

That ebayer is completely wrong. The '65 L79 coil bracket is entirely unique to the Chevelle '65 L79 (the Corvette L79 used a different bracket).

The lower HP small blocks with a cast iron intake DID mount the coil on the intake but in an almost vertical position, not horizontal like on the L79. The L79 bracket also won't work with a cast iron manifold as it is constructed as such to compensate for the shape of the aluminum intake and the height of the carb on the manifold (the bracket attaches to one of the carb studs as well as an intake bolt).

NO Chevy engine I've ever seen had the coil mounted on the firewall from the factory.

Thanks Rich! That's what I was thinking when I saw the pics of his engine. Here's the listing: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320443032493&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

I don't recall Chevy ever using big 'ole sheetmetal screws with poorly matched washers to mount anything to the firewall...

BUT, take a close look. That coil bracket appears to be an L79 bracket that has been hacked and chopped to make it fit to the firewall. The upper portion with a huge screw through it looks to be the portion that would have previously mounted to the carb stud. There are some interesting firewall markings too.

Nothing on the car screams out that it's a fake, in fact it looks to be amazingly complete and the build sheet and POP are nice. I'd like to know where he found the build sheet since they are exceptionally rare on '65's, especially ones in that kind of complete condition. It'd be even more killer with the vinyl top back on it.

A very late Kansas City car - 4th week of July

Note the rear spring spacers.

And the car is sitting relatively flat, those rear springs must be really sagging.

It it always hard to tell from pictures but overall the car looks pretty good.
It looks like it has been painted but has not had a full restoration.

As Rich said, most everything looks correct. The fuel filter is not correct, original was black.

I would like to see the stamp pad without paint.

If this is a clone it is very well done and appears to have been done some time ago. It has lots of small details that would be easy to miss when doing a clone.

It should be inspected by an expert on 65 L79 cars.

Hire Rich to inspect it for you.

That's a nice looking car that seems to be as advertised. I would certainly think it's worth the time to check it out. The coil bracket wouldn't bother me too much since it can be corrected. It may have been mounted there years ago and now assumed to be correct by this owner. The documents and pictures would really be a bonus. I wish I had an extra $25000 laying around. :D
