: Roof soundproofing options.
joerob727 Nov 2nd, 09, 9:01 PM Hey guys,
Car finally coming out of paint shop jail. Getting ready to start on interior and would appreciate any and all opinions.
My '69s roof soundproofing looks like new. Would it be worth the hassle to strip all this stuff out and go with a newer product like Hushmat?
I'm trying to decide if the new stuff is that much better than stock. Also wondering if Hushmat, et al, would come loose under the heat of summer. Old stuff looks like it would hold up another 40 years.
Opinions?
joerob727 Nov 4th, 09, 1:47 AM ANYBODY replace stock sound deadener with Dynamat or Hushmat?
Notice any difference?
1969 El Camino Dan Nov 4th, 09, 5:58 AM If it really looks "like new" I'd leave it alone. Nothing will "sound proof" the area. I had to replace mine 'cause it was thoroughly deteriorated and was hiding rust.
I put "Reflectix" on mine.

jwross007 Dec 7th, 09, 7:25 PM Putting this back "on top". Anyone used Dynamat/Hushmat/Fatmat as roof/headliner insulation? Any feedback on how well it hold up in the head, and how well it sticks would be appreciated!

70SS Dec 7th, 09, 10:26 PM I just did my 70 with dynamat. Did the floor, doors and front portions of the quarters. I'm also installing a radio in the car at this time. I have used Dynamat for years in my field of work and have had good expierences with it.
cheveslakr Dec 7th, 09, 11:21 PM I've never used any of this stuff so really can't help. I know you basically want to know if it's gonna delam on you over time and lay on the headliner fabric and make you rip it out and start over. I would say if it holds to doors and quarters the dynomat and like products should hold up. I'd like to hear from someone that has used it in a roof application also since I've got to replace a small section on my 66.

Machine Man Dec 9th, 09, 4:28 PM I installed Hushmat on the roof of my 69' a few months ago. I used the Hushmat that is 1/16'" thick (Hushmat Ultra). This stuff is really sticky and difficult to remove. I'm not worried about it losing adhesive quality at all. I had my car sitting in the driveway all day on a very sunny day and the Hushmat didn't even budge. The 1/16" thick stuff is easier to work with on the roof because it's easier to get under the rib structure of the roof. It took a very long time to stip out all of the old roof insulation and install the new sound deadener. I'm going to get some pics posted here soon. Did you already order the dynamat?

I have some dynamat sitting in my garage that was targeted for the floor, but I could "borrow" 10 sq. feet or so for the roof. I ordered some fatmat (cheaper and had good reviews) for the roof, but is smells like it is asphalt based, so I'm inclined not to put it up top... I'm hoping to get the dynamat installed asap so I can get the headliner in, so I can get the glass installed so I can drive the darn thing ;)
Did you get your roof entirely clean of all the old glue?? did you just keep scraping away 'till it was clean?
thx -JR
1969 El Camino Dan Dec 9th, 09, 5:57 PM On my Malibu, I used a wide scraper to get most down, then used a wire brush and then painted the entire area w/ POR-15

Mondo454 Dec 9th, 09, 6:18 PM We've used RAAMmat on a few of our builds with great results for deadening the roof.

Philip Dec 9th, 09, 10:26 PM I used Second Skin on the floors in my Nova. It adheres very well; there was a small place I had to remove it and it was a bear to get off. There was no smell in the car after doing the whole floor and letting it sit with the windows up in a hot garage.
I heard the stuff that smells like asphalt is a product designed for roofing not automobiles and can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowe's for a lot less.

jwross007 Dec 10th, 09, 12:54 AM Looks good, hopefully I'll get my dynamat in this weekend.. Didn't pay much for the fatmat (didn't by much and it wasn't too expensive) so I don't mind putting it in the trash if need be! They Butyl based products seem to be the way to go.
MikeMalibu Dec 10th, 09, 11:37 AM I scraped off the old insulation, removed the glue, and then treated and painted the roof underside. Layed in Dynamat and covered it with Dynaliner. Made a big difference in quieting the cabin. Stays put in the hot Sacramento sun. The butly is so sticky I doubt it will fall. If you have ever tried to remove Dynamat, then you know what I mean.

Did you get *all* the glue off? I'm not sure how much more time to spend on it!
chevychad Dec 10th, 09, 3:14 PM I just removed the glue/insulation from my roof and used a carpet/floor scraper. You can find it at home depot or similiar. It is basically a 5 inch wide razor blade. I was able to get the roof really clean.
Cost $6

jwross007 Dec 10th, 09, 3:22 PM Now there's a thought.. looks much more effective than my putty knife!
Kevin Dec 10th, 09, 4:31 PM I installed Fatmat on the entire floor, doors, and firewall of my convertible about four years ago. It didn't smell then (it's rubber-based), it doesn't now, and it for sure will not fall off. Just make sure that your surfaces are clean and dust free as it is only effective when it is securely bonded. I wouldn't call it a "soundproofer" it's more of a dampner. Works as well as Dynamat for 1/10th of the price. Highly recommended.
If I had a roof to worry about I would consider something that is more sound-absorbant like the thicker (1/4" or so) adhesive backed materials.

personally i think for the roof i would be more interested in a product that reduces heat or eliminates it completely from comming into the cabin, more than sound proofing it. theres not much sound that comes from the roof of the car, just wind noise from the windows. I dynamated my firewall all the way back to the rear window, including the doors. I havent done my roof because i dont want to tear out my headliner, its too nice. If it ever sags or rips, then ill do that.
Still havent finished the car so i dont know how the dnyamat is, but i was planning on buying some of that second skin stuff that is much cheaper to do the trunk area.
jwross007 Dec 12th, 09, 7:45 PM OK, Just finished putting the Dynamat on my roof. Next (as soon as I finish running wires for my amp) it will go on the floor! Stuff is STICKY... don't think there will be any issues with it coming down!
