How important are these for a daily driver? I looked at a post about 12" disc conversion,but they did'nt use dust shields! Thanks, Scott! :confused:

I dont think it is for dust, The brakes make plenty dust of there own. I think its too keep larger things off like gravel.

Unless you drive regurarly on dirt/gravel roads, I would not worry about it. I am also doing disc brake conversion, all around, with no dust shields.

I was wondering the same thing. Does anyone know if they are still available from GM??? :confused: (or elsewhere) Good luck trying to find a usable pair at the bone yard. :mad:

Hey guys,you can still get the dust sheilds from ground up,or year one places like that,but original parts group is the cheapest they are 59.00 from them.I dont think they would fit 12"rotors though.I'm not sure.

Keeping dust out is not the only purpose of a dust shield. It is also meant to direct air into the rotor to cool it off. I would definately put them on.

I just did the brakes on my wifes '00 impala. 12" rotors and no shields. Same on my '96 Z28 SS. I've seen lots of conversions to 12" or larger rotors and nobody is using shields. The stock size rotor kits all seem to come with them though.

If you want to run them just yank some from the yard and paint em. Dirt cheap + dirt cheap = damn near free.

Just look for the B-Body spindle swap / 12" rotor candidates and yank the backing plates. Thats where I got mine. Painted them with Eastwoods Clear Zinc. Done deal.

Found Them. It was driving me nuts so I started lookin around for them. Hotchkis lists the gm part number on their site for the 12" rotor dust shields. Left#344023 Right#344024. Available from gmpartsdirect.com for $9.17 a side, sounds fair to me. :cool:

It's actually a great link that lists all the gm part numbers required to do the tall spindle conversion with 12" rotors, less custom a-arms of course. I printed it off for refrence as its certainly a keeper for those who are doing the swap. smile.gif

Don't know how to post the link directly because the site uses frames :mad: But I can tell you how to get there;

Start here: hotchkis home page (http://www.hotchkis.net/secure_index.html)
Then on the left scroll down and click on "instructions", the under A-arms@accessories click "64-72 gm A-body brake conversion sheet"

How I ever ended up there is beyond me :D

'69 - '72 chevelle spindles, rotor, bracket and caliper will interchange with the 1st gen. The shields spec'd out are for '78 and later full size. I take it, it's the tall spindle. Are the bracket holes the same on center on the 2 spindles? If so the shields might work on the 12" LS1 Camaro brakes I'm converting if they don't interfear with the larger calipers...

I don't know about the tall spindle rotors, but the stock dust shields for our pre-72 cars incorporate a lock tab for the bolt that holds the caliper bracket in place. Therefore, the dust shield would be essential if you were installing stock A body disc brakes with two piece spindles on one of our cars.
