Does anyone redo the original console parts, like re-chroming the top plate,(chrome around the edge and black on the inside),and th eone around the door, rebuilding the clock, and what color(or gloss) black is everything painted? I do need a new door, I guess I will try to find one used so don't have to go with plastic.
Thanks in advance,
Brian

Brian,
Don't know of a resto service but someone will.
How bad is it? The chrome lip around the outside edge usually doesn't pit much.
You can clean the chrome lip with some 000 steel wool dipped in chrome polish. Does a good job.
The groove is harder to clean but can be done.
I just redid my console this weekend. I took it completely apart.
Sprayed Easy Off over cleaner all over it and let it sit about 5 hours and scubbed it with an old tooth brush. Really messy. Sprayed it off with a hose and then sprayed the oven cleaner on again.
Wha-la all the old paint came off the metal top plate and console door.
Couldn't get all the paint off the plastic base but enough to get it uniform and the grain showing well.
Taped the chrome off with green painters tape.
Resprayed the pieces with SEM satin paint. Took the tape off and reassembled.
Looks wonderful....like brand new.
Just an idea. Save you alot of money if you can do it yourself.

There is a place in Mass that does consoles. I have seen his work, and it is awesome. I don't have the name at this time, but I will do some research and get back to you.

I did the console of my 66 (same thing as 67 w/subtle differences) myself. The chrome around the outside gutter was in good shape so I just used masking tape and a small xacto hobby blade and trimmed the excess tape. Also taped off the 4 speed shift pattern as well as the chrome ring around the clock. Then painted it semi gloss black. The lid could still use a little more attention but the console itself came out nice actually. All I have to do now is get the clock rebuilt and get a new shift boot.
