: 5 speed in a Mid 80's Elcamino
compinv Oct 30th, 09, 8:22 PM I am wanting to put a 5 speed out of a mid 80's Z28 into an El Camino. What car do I need to get the pedals out of for this project? I believe the Mid 80's Z's used a slave cylinder. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance.
zeke67 Oct 30th, 09, 9:58 PM Mid 80's G bodies were available with a manual option. Not common, but the best way to have a bolt in pedal set up. When I was regularly doing swap meets, you'd see the pedals from time to time. I wonder if anyone is repopping them.
andyo Oct 30th, 09, 10:28 PM 78-79 chevy malibu's had stick as an option. i know they are repoped but i dont know who makes them.
compinv Oct 31st, 09, 4:58 AM Ok. I did not know they had a stick option. I will look around for them. I may post a want item also. Thanks.
DZAUTO Oct 31st, 09, 8:43 AM Yep, beginning with the 78 models, the GM mid-sized cars (Malibu, Cutlass, etc) were available with manual trannys. In the late 70s, there was a Chevy dealer (Alan Merrill) here in Okla City that was advertising an ultra cheap Monte Carlo (advertised as a Colonade Coupe, I guess the name was attractive). As it turned out, it was a V6, 3sp, NO air cond MC. Apparently they sold a bunch of them! If you could find one of those, it would have all the necessary parts for the conversion.
Also, as I understand it, these same parts were used by GM several years later in the Monte SS Aerocoupe prototype (fast back) with a 350/5sp which was a VERY hot car, but never saw production. If I remember correctly, this 5sp Monte SS made the Super Chevy circuit in the 86-87(?) time frame.
daveseitz Oct 31st, 09, 9:10 AM A VP at General Mills had a Cutlass with a 305 and a 5sp from the factory as a personal car. That thing got great mileage and had a little snort for the time back in 80-81.
chevelless502 Oct 31st, 09, 9:50 AM I may be wrong but i thought you could get a manual trans in the 78-86 elkys? Why not just find one of them?

Did you miss this very first sentence in my #5 reply above???
"Yep, beginning with the 78 models, the GM mid-sized cars (Malibu, Cutlass, etc) were available with manual trannys."
Elkys would have been included in the "etc".
novaderrik Oct 31st, 09, 11:55 AM i think they got rid of the manuals when they switched from the "A" body designation to the "G" body designation in the '81 time frame- but maybe they still offered them in El Camnios after that, since they were legally a "truck".
the 78 and newer A/G bodies used a different bellhousing than anything else, with the Z bar pivot a lot lower than any other car or truck. but that problem is taken care of by using a hydraulic throwout bearing setup and whatever bellhousing you can find.
hit a bigger junkyard and look in early 80's El Caminos and Malibus- but as already stated, there were some 78-80 Cutlasses that had 5 speeds in them stock.
i've read of people converting 80's F body pedals to fit with a little work- they went hydraulic in '84 or so, so it should be easy to find that setup- or just get it from the car you get the trans from.

I saw your post but it didnt say anything bout the Elkys as well.
LeoP Oct 31st, 09, 4:56 PM AFAIK, the 81 was the last year for manual Elkys,Malibu's, Keisler makes a kit, a friend of mine put one of these kits in his 84 MCSS.
compinv Oct 31st, 09, 7:40 PM I have a 5 speed out of an 84 z28. So I guess that would have been a slave cylinder set up. I wonder if the Camaro pedals would work in the car? Or if it would matter with the slave cylinder. I just wanted to make mine different with a 5 speed. Everyone has one with a automatic transmission.
AXEMAN39 Oct 31st, 09, 7:43 PM Lots of info here, Make sure you get the correct bell housing and clutch fork or the geometry will be all wrong. A friend of mine has aftermarket clutch and brake pedals, Z bar and frame bracket, he may want to sell them if your interested pm me and ill ask him. we just did this swap in his 84 Pontiac GP a couple weeks ago, its all still fresh in my head.

cuisinartvette Oct 31st, 09, 8:04 PM Think that would be a neat setup not often seen. Sounds like someone here has done it, 3rdgen.org may have some good info on it, too.
langss Nov 1st, 09, 1:03 AM 83-92 f-bodys use a hydraulic slave cylinder and a unique bellhousing.Because of the popularity of Automatic to Manual swaps in thirdgens the bellhousings are getting harder to find. You also have to use the smaller 153 tooth flywheel and starter to match. You might get lucky and find a CFC car at the PYP that's still intact and pull everything. Also the six cylinder T-5 is not the same as the V-8 T-5 and will not work. You must pull everything from a V-8 car.As stated above thirdgen.org is a world of info.
compinv Nov 1st, 09, 6:12 AM I have a 5 speed with bell housing from a 84 Z28. It has the pivot arm with it. I dont have anything else. I have a good manual flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate but not sure what size it is. I just need to find the pedals. I think my best best would be to go with the hydraulic clutch but maybe not. Might be easier to use the mechanical. If I just knew which cylinder to get and which pedal set up it would work with. I will check my local junk yard and see if he has any manual tranny camaros. I can job the setup and then play with it on mine I guess.
compinv Nov 3rd, 09, 6:08 PM I just won a set of pedals with z bar and linkage today on Ebay. I got it for $50 believe it not. I hope it is the right one.
newmexguy Nov 4th, 09, 2:37 PM might want to consider a Richmond (Doug Nash?) five speed, the trans case should have traditional ears that mount to traditional 58-81 Chevy bellhousings. Should be far more stout than a T-5 trans as well.
