I did a brake job on my Chevelle about 6 months ago now for the past couple of weeks the right rear brake will lock up and skid under normal stopping. I removed the wheel and brake drum and backed off the self adjuster, after a few days it was doing it again, and I backed off again. Well i've done this 3 times, why does it keep tighting up? Also I can't get the left rear drum off, but it turns freely with the axle and dosen't sound like the brake shoes are to tight and draging on the drum.
any suggestions guys, thanks ,Gene

I know this sounds crazy but I think, you might have put the brakes together backwards? I think the the backing plates are symetrical and it is possible to put them on backwards wich would make the brakes tighten every time you came to a stop. they would work fine in every other sense except for the tightening issue.
As for getting the drum off, have you tried adjusting the tension off of the shoes using a flat head srewdriver through the adjustment slot in the drum before trying to pry the drum off?
My drums get a little tight and that usually does the trick.
good luck

If you you put the star adjuster in up side down it will adjust the brakes every time you hit the pedal. Take both drums off as "Busted Knuckle" described and compare them. The star adjuster should be opposite of each other. I always do one side at a time so I can use one for reference
hope this helps.

It sounds to me like the parking brake might be sticking. It's easy to check - with the drum off, take the palms of your hands and "smack" the shoes back and forth while looking at the top anchor pin. If the forward shoe climbs off the anchor pin, your parking brake is stuck. You can remove the parking brake strut (the solid bar that fits between the 2 shoes with a spring wrapped around the front) and test drive it to see if the problem goes away.
