or at least without the trim on. I bought a a project '71 Chevelle that had just come back from the body shop. The car got new quarter skins, and the side holes for the vinly top trim got filled in. I think they just got mudded over, but I don't know exactly where they are, or how many. Any pics would be greatly appreciated. Also, is there anywhere to buy the T-shaped clips that hold the trim on? Thanks, Matt

I'm always the one ASKING the questions, so I finally get to answer one! I've got a 70 with an original right quarter was an original vinyl top car. I measured these against the crease in the body line. From front to back, the holes measure 9" up front to 8.5" over the center of the wheelwell to 10" at the rearmost point. I can't guarantee that these holes were from the ORIGINAL vinyl top...they could have been from a repop. The holes meet very close to the lower corner of the rear window/driprail. and extend rearward of the forward edge of the decklid I'm signing off for the night, any questions let me know and I'll check tomorrow.

Thanks for the pics HeloPilot, This kind of raises more questions, than answers for me. What was used to hold the trim on your car? I have the holes on the rear window filler panel for the potmetal pieces, and some welded T-studs for clips to slide on, but I don't have all those small holes that look like screws went in them. Shining a light on the inside of the quarter panel, I can see maybe 4-5 larger holes, but no smaller ones??? I'm now remebering why its never a good idea to jump in the middle of someone else's project, no matter how good of a deal it is.

Well, I'm in a bit of the same boat, only I did it to myself. I've had this car for 6 years. In the first 30 days, I tore it apart in a hurry, ran out of money, got married, moved twice, and changed careers. Now that I'm getting back to it, I've forgoten a good bit. Here's what I recall: From the outside of the top to bare metal you've got some vinyl trim, followed by an aluminum strip that is riveted to the quarter. The vinyl top sits between either the aluminum strip and the quarter...or the aluminum strip and the vinyl trim.
As I recall, I drilled the rivets out of the aluminum strip and the strip came free...I think I have it buried somewhere. At this point, someone else is best suited to discuss the install of the top, I can only give you measurements for the holes. There was a great post on here a year or so back about installing the vinyl top with hundreds of little paper clips. The post had lots of pics, and might help you out.
