I have 70 malibu originally with a 307 now with a 454, when I put it in gear or step on the brakes or on the ocasional bump, I hear a popping noise coming from my front end. It was rebuilt 2 years ago before I bought it and I have checked all nuts and greased all the fittings.
What could cause this? What should else should I look for?

Look closely at all your rubber bushings and check your motor mounts?

Take a look at the control arms around the ball joints. I had one break last week. The front had been popping, and making other noises, for several days. Fortunately, it happen while backing out of my driveway and not while going down the highway.

One VERY inportant thing to check. Be sure that the lower ball joint studs are seated ALL the way down into the steering knuckles. I had a lower ball joint stud snap off at 40 miles per hour a couple of years ago because the stud wasn't seated all the way. The constant, although slight, up and down movement of the knuckle eventually caused stress on the ball joint stud. There had been a slight "thud" or "popping" when the brakes were applied in reverse, but the noise eventually disappeared....until the stud snapped! Had to change my underwear that night!

Bushings appear good. All nuts are tight. The ball joints were the first thing I checked and they look good.
I'll check the motor mounts this weekend.

I've had a popping in my drivers side front suspension since we put on the slotted rotors...I see a new lower ball joint in my near future (replaced at the same time as rotors but couldnt get a MOOG, had to settle for made in Mexico Oreily crap)
