I've being given an '82 Camaro power steering box that decodes as the variable ratio style 3.5-4 turns lock to lock. Can I use this box in the 70 Chevelle? I'm being given the pitman arm as well.....thanks guys.

My records show that the 1970 Chevelles had
16-12.4:1 variable ratio gears. The 1970 Chevelle wagons had 17.5:1 gears.

The 1982 Camaros with variable ratio were 15-13 gears.

I don't know if Saginaw revamped their gear components between 1970 and 1982 but the ratio differences (one point!) are hardly much to get excited about.

Also, GM and Saginaw seemed to get their variable ratio gears just backwards. The larger number (i.e. slower ratio) was the on-center ratio. The lower number (faster ratio) was near full lock. Their variable ratio gears did reduce the number of turns lock to lock, but they certainly weren't fast and crisp on-center.

So if you really want a gear that responds quickly right on center, you should be using a straight ratio 14:1 or a 12.7:1 gear NOT a variable ratio gear.
