Is that the issue where Frieburger announced "Pro-Touring is dead" for the 137th time since the late 90s? ;)

Because he likes late '70s/early '80s style, we all should..?

Sorry...not buying it. I've seen enough 15-inch Cragar SS wheels with Radial T/As to last a lifetime. I'm into evolution- at least technically. Vintage style is one thing- but upgrades are supposed to make a car work BETTER, aren't they?

I'll not be pulling my 13-inch 6-piston brakes off to fit 15-inch wheels any time soon...the 17s look just fine, thank you. I'm confident my Nitto 555s have a bit better bite than Radial T/As too..!

Hot Rod Magazine sucks I gave up on them a decade ago.

I do like that car era as well though...

SWEET!I think that looks great! That just brings me back to the early 80's seeing Chevelle's and everything else jacked up, yellow headlights, mags, side pipes, dual 4's out the hood, CB whip -makes me feel young again! You could pull into McD's on a Fri/Sat night on the blvd. and the lot would be full - now you get a ticket for it. I like the retro vibe, these cars were made during those times and will always look good with the period aftermarket parts on them.

I had the whip antenna on it till I painted it and I don't want to mess the paint up on the trunk lid otherwise it would still be on there.

Have to admit that a lot of the guys around the area are changing theirs back to a more coventional stance and equipment.
Most of the Pro Touring cars that get sold are being retrofitted back to stock and or the 80's look by the new owners so he may just be right! This time!
I know I would change it back, just not my thing!:)

it was redone to be period correct for the early 80's- but some of the equipment used was modern stuff made to look old.
like the old school MSD box with the brand new guts, the big aftermarket aluminum heads, and modern fuel system hidden away that feeds HP series Holley carbs thru old school red/blue AN fittings and braided steel lines.
it even said in the article that they got the 13" front brakes to clear the retro wheels, but put a stock type brake setup on it for some reason {cough}big advertiser{cough} or another...

I like it. I wouldn't do it, but I do like the what they did. I have nothing against Pro Touring, I think they look cool too. But I haven't had any problem stopping with my factory Disc brake in front and drums in the back. So I don't see the reason to replace them with high dollar after market discs and 18" wheels all the way around.

I mostly think they did it out of boredom. I didn't take it as the new fad.

Hey, dudes. Sorry some of you didn't like the thing, but that's ok. A few seem to think that if it's in the magazine, we're telling you what you SHOULD like. Not really. We're just noting a trend and acting on it. Overall, people over 35 or 40 are going ape for the car.

And the big Baer rotors did fit with the 15x4.5 Cragars with a wheel spacer. They did not fit with the other wheels used in the story, so we swapped to Master Power brakes for the Center Lines and others. It's advisable to actually read the stuff prior to bashing.

Thanks! Im going to go find me a copy. To tell the truth I think it was when Dave was the editor at car craft that got me to start resubscribing. I like the junkyard builds, actual costs of the builds, including the mistakes. Plus you guys did the el cheapo elcamino! who could not like a magazine that builds a elcamino? ( look in my sig).
I'll even admitting to finding the second eddy carb for cheap at the swap meet this weekend for my wieand WCV327 low rise dual quad setup for my 68 elcamino! Jim

To be honest, the whole reason I bought this months Hot Rod was to read about the Camaro. I still like the look of Blown cars. I've got to buy next months Hot Rod for the Drag Week coverage.

I really keep my subscription for the drag week, PGD, and power tour issues. Every now and then an issue gets me miffed, but those few issues keep me on the hook. I'd love to do the power tour one of these days.

Well I have this to say about all that:

First I happen to like it all.. I like Pro-touring, I like vintage, retro, Rat rod, Hot Rod, Low rider, Street Freak, and sleepers... etc.... so to me it's all good. Not that everyone has to like every style... But I can appreciate different styles and looks for what they are.

Being of the 40 something ilk and Reading Hot Rod since the 4th grade, I really dig the retro look.. so much so that I had inadvertently went that route with my '69 GTO... albeit not all the way.. (I recently painted it with expoxy black promer...looks bad ass, and it does have Weld Drag Lites on it which I plan on replacing with some retro 5 spokes) Pictures coming soon...

Anyway thumbs up for the "Crusher Camaro" ....,.

Personally (IMHO) I would rather have a pre-80's car done in any style then something built after 1980.... Just me.... (though I do have to say I like the new Challenger's and Camaro's probably due to their retro influences.....but soon everyone will be driving one... AGAIN...LOL)

I have to say I love the whole 70's look even though I'm only 20. I wish I would have been able to experience it firsthand.

I don't know, just something about those cars being jacked up in the back with wide tires sticking out and the slapper bars and the cheap chrome diff. covers, miss matched torq thrusts, etc. Reading that article made me laugh as when I bought my car it still had a lot of that stuff present, the Cragars, Accell super coil, ladder bars, red heater hoses, etc. Like I said I love the look, for the most part try to preserve it. I actually felt a little sad installing an HEI knowing that the super coil was no longer going to be used, and it still hangs on the firewall until the motor comes out and the underhood area gets cleaned up.

Trends change with time, I have nothing against the new style with better brakes and bigger wheels and some cars actually really make it for me, but I dont think we should let go or criticize that bygone era.

I like the idea, but most of the "must haves" in the online article deserved to be left off, IMHO. That in and of itself makes it better than a throwback car from the '80s. I know that list is in jest, but that schtick was reality back then :)

I like the "Day 2" cars more, but this is also a pretty cool idea that I bet will gain some traction. Part of the reason many of us own these cars is due to some sort of sentimental value, and making it look like it did when we first had or saw them seems to be yet another logical offshoot of this hobby. Quite a few of us missed the true Day 2 stuff, but many of us are old enough to remember these cars when they were basically old used cars after the first musclecar boom.

It would be nice if the mags followed suit. The magazines were much better back then, IMHO. I still have many of them because the articles are worth keeping. This car might have me taking a second look at Hot Rod next time I'm at the store.

see I told you that my foot gas pedel and dimmer switch is in style, and my rally rims with white lettered BFGs look cool, chrome skull on the shifter, duel chrome tips poking out past the rear bumber by several inches, 3 gauges mounted below the dash and beep beep floor mats are the shilts. fake earl fittings covering the flex metal pulled over rubber hoses, big breathers with the lid fliped, big honking yellow wires to the plugs, flame paint job dang I got it all and didn't even relieze it. Back then and still today I want a big blower sticking out of that flat 64 chevelle hood, I even have a original steel hood stashed away to be cut for that 8-71.

The 5-spokes are "70's" but what I remember from the 70's are 5-spokes with straight axles under the front end (or at least some jacked up coils) and N-series 50's out back with blocks under the springs and/or air shocks with 70+ psi in them...

Got some pictures around somewhere of a 66 or 67 GTO, a few 567 Chevs and Willy's coupes all with a straight axles. Thought were pretty cool back then..

On Day 1, they came from the factory. On Day 2, they had Cragars or Torque Thrusts with pie crust/pan cheater slicks on chrome reversed wheels or factory steelies in the back :) Basically the same thing as what this "Crusher Camaro" is, but more geared toward what people did when the cars were newer and probably still under warranty. I guess you could say the Motion cars are at the extreme end of Day 2 modded cars.

I always Thought of "Day two" mods as the gimicky stuff that people did after buying a car... Wheels, CBs, 8-Tracks, Speakers... I would probably limit my day 2 performance mods to headers & exhaust mods, maybe a carb swap- not real engine mods like cams, head, etc etc..

Just like today when you see the kid down the street comes home with his first new honda civic- and within a month it has a body kit & different rims on it.

I actually liked it better with Cragers... but it wasn't entirely gay with the Pro-Touring wheels it had in it's past life....

NOTHING Beats a Blower and Twin Carbs poking out of an open hood... unless it's a tunnel ram under a Mail box hood scoop... LOL... Hey I'm freaking OLD... what do you expect.
