: A, B, G spindle measurement
Beaux Oct 27th, 09, 11:56 AM Looking for spindle measurement, BJ to BJ, for the A, B and G spindles. I have sets of spindles here I need to check and no PN's or stamping but they are all GM and one of the 3. If I have measurements I think I can verify with that.
Anyone have measurements? I found plenty of pictures and a posted measurement of a GM spindle but I have tired of searching the interweb.
bochnak Oct 27th, 09, 12:04 PM I believe the B body spindle has cast in steering arms and caliper mounts. That should narrow it down some.
Beaux Oct 27th, 09, 12:25 PM I am a little slow. Can you elaborate on cast? Just looking for cast iron? Apologies but the mounts have the disc brackets in them and the B spindles, or what I think are the B spindles, are on the chassis. Others are along my wall. On the car behind big brakes and wheels and the arms are covered up in cloth but I can pull the cloth off. Just not sure exactly what I am looking for in terms of "cast". They are painted and all material looks to be the same but like I said - halfway covered up and buried behind wheels, brackets and 13 inch wilwood brakes.

Derek69SS Oct 27th, 09, 1:33 PM A-body spindles have a bolt-on steer arm and caliper bracket. B & G and later F spindles are all cast one-piece like those posted above.

NOW I got it! :D
Bueno. So now I am down to G vs B vs F and how to tell which is which. I have sets here and at a buddies and thought there might be a measurement to take between the BJ's to know for sure when I dont have a comparison with me. For instance, a set I just measured appears to be 6 1/2 inches from BJ to BJ and I am not sure if its B or G.
Anyhow, this helps me. Much appreciated as always. Its the dumb little things that cause me to overthink and its not good when the mentally challenged overthink. Nothing good comes from it.
novaderrik Oct 27th, 09, 11:25 PM it would help if you could post up some good pics of all the spindles in question, with any casting numbers or marks.
Schurkey Oct 29th, 09, 2:45 AM I prefer the term "steering knuckle" to "spindle"; the spindle is the steel shaft of the steering knuckle that the wheel bearings rotate on. "Spindle" seems to be the more popular term, though.
The YEAR of the part is important, too. "A" body knuckles from '72 are entirely different from "A" body knuckles from '73, for example.
The 70-to-82-or-83 F body, the '73-newer "A" body, the 75-newer X body, the '77-newer B body all used similar knuckles although there were some differences in bearing diameter and--maybe--ball joint taper. I think the '78-newer version was lighter weight but stronger due to computer modeling of the stresses incurred; material was removed from low-stress areas.
