question is-what do i have to do to access the area where it sits to repair the small cable where it is attached to the selector? do i have to drop the steering column to get to it?if so what are the steps to do this. you'd be surprised at the lack of information about this in the books and such.(i have all of them).any help would be appreciated,as the repair is easy--but the access is hard to understand.thanks to all.

This paper is not real detailed about the PRNDL wire that is connected to the shift bowl on the steering column. The information is on page 3.

You need to disconnect the wire / cable before you drop the column, otherwise you will damage the indicator or the cable.

If the cable is still connected to the pointer, then all you have to do is remove the trim under the steering wheel. If you're replacing the whole cable assy, then the dash will have to come out. My cable broke at the column end, and I used a butt splice to attach a short piece of nylon tie strap to the cable to hold the button. See pics

this is probably the most commonly broken part ....... :(

I think everyone in the world breaks their first one ......... OPPS shouldn't have dropped that column :clonk:
