68 SS boy

Right now my 68 Chevelle SS is matador red & I would like to have it repainted the original cordovan maroon. The paint guy said I would need about $2500 in materials. Does this sound reasonable? Also, what do you think about bringing my car to the local high school & have the auto paint & body shop to paint it ? thanks :beers:

Maybe one of the experts will chime in here, but here is my guess based on the stuff that I used, just finished paint on my '69. Roughly $1500
Sand paper - $250
Epoxy Primer - 200
Filler - 120
2k primer 200
Base Coat $300
Clear Coat $200
Tape for masking $30
Masking Paper $20
Lacquer thinner $30
Shop towels ?
Buffing compounds $100
As far as having the high school body shop do the work - You only want to do this once so I would take a close look at other cars that they have done.

We just painted a 3/4 ton Dodge diesel extended cab 4x4 in my garage.
About $1400 total in supplies.
Included stuff that David said.

To go with good material and not cut corners on supplies its going to be in the $1200- $1500. Make sure you use a basecoat/clearcoat system. As with everything there are different levels of quality. Go with one of the major paint mfgs, Dupont PPG, BASF (RM), Sikkens, etc. I managed an automotive paint store for 12 years and auto paint is definitely you get what you pay for.

Prices are right on with the other posters said thats what I paid for mine.As far as the school doing it expect amature results not that I'm a pro.I went to the local vocational school and remeber that other classes of learning wandered through the shop selling their goods .What a good distraction for a teen boy to see the hotties selling their cookies while working on your car cutting corners to get to the goodie tray:thumbsup:.Sorry about the flat spot right their in the middle of your hood Jimmy was distracted by some cookies:D.
