: 307 to 454 distributor wiring

i switched out my 307 for a 454 and put in a hei distributor. on the 307 i had points and the wire going to coil + side has two wires my question is do i use both of these wires to my new hei distrubutor or just one and if just one what wire do i use there is a orange and yellow wire any help would be appreciated :beers:

i switched out my 307 for a 454 and put in a hei distributor. on the 307 i had points and the wire going to coil + side has two wires my question is do i use both of these wires to my new hei distrubutor or just one and if just one what wire do i use there is a orange and yellow wire any help would be appreciated :beers:Not sure of the colors but the resistor wire(usually in a sheathing),the feed for the coil needs to be changed out for a heavier gauge wire because the hei needs the full voltage all the time where the points type coil didnt.The exception to the reduced voltage at the point type coil is during cranking at which time full power is sent to coil while in crank mode,this wire you no longer need .When I did it I opened up harness removerd resistor wire and soldered the appropriate ends on I think 10 gauge wire.

The orange wire(usually in a sheathing) comes from the firewall bulkhead (check to be sure)and is a resistor wire. This wire needs to be changed (from the firewall bulkhead) so it can be used for the HEI.

The yellow wire comes from the starter "R" terminal (check to be sure). It was used to send full power to the points when cranking the engine.

You need to test the orange wire by itself (that you replaced) to see if it has power with the key in BOTH the crank and run positions. If it does, the yellow wire is not needed. If it does not have power with key in crank position, then you need the tellow wire also.
