: PS box in Sept Hot Rod
WayneK Aug 12th, 03, 1:17 PM While paging throuh the Sept issue of Hot Rod. thet did a write up on there 67 Chevelle power tour car.
All the goodied big brakes sprng ect...Onething did catch my asttention.. on page 53 pictured is a PS steering box.. they claim is from a S-10 pick up with the Z08 performance suspension package option...
Both my Chevelles have late model quick ratio high resistance boses in... one from a Mont SS and one From a Buick Grand National... and rag joint and fitting from Lee Manf. in CA.
Finding these boxed in yars were not easy.. and with the number of S-10's around, ASSUME these are pleantyfull ???
any one have the skinny on what years these boxes
came on and what to look for to ID them ???
Thanks
64chevlle Aug 12th, 03, 11:48 PM TTT...... I wanna know too...lol I seen that article but info was lacking... I'm runnin a 64 with manual steering and thought the s-10 box sounded like a good idea..

Bob Tiley Aug 13th, 03, 12:38 AM I was wondering if they had the propper steering stops in them. I thought the Jeep Cherokee box was a good one to use but maybe the S-10 Z-08 box is better.
BillsCamino Aug 13th, 03, 1:01 AM Wayne,
I don't know about the S-10 PS but...
When converting from power steering to manual, I installed a mid 80's MANUAL S-10 steering box into my '80 Camaro. Bolted right in and used the Camaro's PS pitman arm and S-10 rag joint.
WayneK Aug 13th, 03, 10:07 AM Thanks Guy's... Ilov my Mont and Grand National Boxes... but there HARD to find and when you do there not at regular junk yard prices.. graemlins/angry.gif
Think I'll drop a line to HR Att. Steve Magnante
and see if he has an answer...( or can find one )
I'll poast the reply , If I get one
1966_L78 Aug 13th, 03, 12:59 PM Ilov my Mont and Grand National Boxes Try to find a Caprice, ex-police car. Same 12:1 ratio, internal stops closer to a stock Chevelle than the Monte/GN boxes, and probably more plentiful. I even found one at the local Pick-N-Pull, same cost as any other box...
That said, I finally decided to get a "New" box from AGR... I couldn't be happier (well, I could be if it was a little cheaper tongue.gif ), correct hose fittings and input/ragjoint for my Chevelle...
Now what to do with that Caprice box and the rebuild kit I bought...
jwm64bu Aug 13th, 03, 1:09 PM Another'64 owner here, who is getting ready to replace the stock manual gearbox for power steering. I'm very interested to hear the results of fitting S-10 gearbox in place, and the amount of travel it will allow. Please keep me posted also.Thanks.
jwm64bu Aug 13th, 03, 1:12 PM When I got my '64 back from previous owner ,he was in the middle of utilizing Caprice gearbox. Problem is ,chevelle pitman arm won't fit Caprice gearbox(too small) and arm from caprice gearbox is too long ,pushing steering linkage back against the frame.
elcamino72 Aug 13th, 03, 8:06 PM The stock Chevelle/El Camino pitman arm off of my 72 fit the Caprice 9C1 (police car) steering box just fine.
1866malibu Aug 13th, 03, 8:42 PM ok ZQ8 rpo code included 16"camaro style wheels but this suspension could be ordered with the 4cyl. or the 4.3 v6. gm part# for gear box 26071296. may not come with pitman arm? hope this helps. smile.gif

1966_L78 Aug 14th, 03, 12:07 PM chevelle pitman arm won't fit Caprice gearbox(too small) All the Chevelle Power Steering boxes have the same pitman shaft as the Caprice, and same as the S10...
So any Chevelle Power Steering pitman will fit the Caprice boxes... Manual Steering pitmans might not fit, but they won't fit the Chevelle Power steering pitman either...
Now the input shafts are different, requiring a different "ragjoint", but this was changed in the late 70's/early 80's, so the S10 box will require the same ragjoint as the Caprice, to swap into a Chevelle...
Check the powersteering stuff in the tech archives, somewhere around this site (I forget)...
Craig, I'll email you...
