I'm going to do the jeep steering box conversion. I just ordered the fittings from lee and i'm going to the salvage yard for the box. I called and they had two different ones for a 96 jeep charokee. They said one was a steering assist and the other was for a larado. I'm thinking i need the one for the larado. I saw somewhere where there are alpha codes on them where would that be so i know i get the right box.
thanks

You need the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Laredo will not fit. Do a search on here and read the info 93-98 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Hi, I'm looking for a manual steering box for my 1970 Chevelle SS.
I see many steering boxes on the web that claim to be for 65-71 Chevelles but I’m told that most are for Chevys with small block engines.
Mine has a big block. So, which one do I need and where can I get a used or new one?
The numbers on my current steering box indicate Saginaw 3579142-223
Thanks, Duane

Sorry i meant to say they had two for the grand cherokee, one for the limited and the other for the laredo. The limited one had pwr assist so the guy at the salvage yard said. I'm thinking i need the laredo one.

Did you ever find out if the Laredo box is what you need. I'm able to score one for free for my project and wanted to know if this 97 Laredo box will work.
Thanks

I thought a Laredo was a package on a jeep grand cherokee? Kinda like a eddie bauer explorer?... Or my honda is an accord ex, not a different car.

Go with the Grand Cherokee - it is a bolt in. You'll need a rag joint from a 84-85 1/2 ton Chevy pickup - AutoZone a week ago gets $44.00 for it, no discounts. The "Power Assist" may be language for a variable ratio one - and that would be good too.

Might want to investigate a bit... my recollection is that somewhere in there the Jeeps started getting speed sensitive power assist. When I was checking into this I believe that the steering pumps were tweaked for the speed sensitive system and not the steering gearbox.

You are corret. The Laredo is a package for the Jeep Grand Cherokee. I was trying to determine if the box had to be from a bare bones Grand Cherokee, or would a Grand Cherokee Laredo and Grand Cherokee Limited work as well.
I'm not trying to read too much into this (i hope) i was just corious if it had do be a specific type of grand cherokee.
