Hello, I'm puting new calipers and rotors on my car and would like to paint them to prevent rust using the brake paint that VHT has. I can't decide whether to paint them silver or black. Would the rotors run cooler or hotter painted black? It's not a race car, but I do a lot of highway driving, so if there is an advantage to a lighter color,I will use it. Thanks for any replies.

It is my opinion that if you put any coating on the calipers or rotors will make them run hotter.

Also, make sure that you can live with the painted brake parts looking bad after a while. I painted some calipers black (with G2 brake paint) and to my surprise the paint comes off with brake cleaner... So, make sure you do not use any cleaners on your painted brake parts.

Thanks for the reply. You make a good point. Now I may not paint the brake parts. I don't drive it in the snow, so the parts should not rust for a while. Thanks again

I've found that Testors model paint works best for calipers. The paint tends to get harder the hotter they get.

I painted the calipers on my old RX-7 Turbo to match the car (no, not ricer yellow! Blue!) and after a year's worth of track events - road course racing - they didn't even begin to dull. Never had any problems with degreaser either.

The small bottles will work fine if you brush it on, but I used the the special Boyd's colors in spray cans.

I've seen calipers painted with "caliper paint" boil the paint off after a few hard laps. I'm very happy with Testors for high heat areas.

I'll second Team140. It sounds silly, but the Testor's model paint works!
I used ot on my '79 RX-7's calipers, coincidentally. I just slathered on 2 or three coats or it (red) after a thorough cleaning. Just the little 1/4 oz. bottles - buy 3 or 4.
When I upgraded the brakes last year, I used the caliper paint in a spray can that Pep Boys has. I forget the brand, but it ended up looking about the same. Coverage wasn't great; it took 3 or 4 coats of the spray, but it looks good.
On my Cutlass, I think I'll try Duplicolor's Ceramic caliper paint. It brushes on, and comes with a spray cleaner. Saw it at Autozone - it's not on Duplicolor's web site yet.
