Was the same base used for both auto and 4 speed factory consoles.
Do you only have to change the top plates to make the auto console into a 4 Speed console ???
If this is true...Will an after market top plate work on a factory console.
I searched all over our forums and couldnt find this answer.

Who knows..what top plate are you thinkin about. I never saw any aftermarket top plate for that application

Ahhhh Now I see what he meant. Somehow I was thinking we were talking about an aftermarket top that might be used in place of the stock stuff or in place of knock off reproductions.

Don't know about the stuff offered today with the repro bases but I can say this. I have an original GM stick shift top cover stored away in my basement. I bought it new in the late 70's early 80's It is a nice piece...GM was making some quality parts back in the day. No it is not for sale.

Sorry about the misunderstanding of the original question on the repop parts. I really thought that you had found someone who had come up with some sort of insert like the Covans dash insert and that you were asking if such things worked. Where I got that idea about your question I may never know..

BTW if you are doing a conversion you need ALL the little correct odds and ends that go inside the console. You CANNOT make it work without the correct floor hump. boot and retainer for the boot. I did an automatic to stick conversion years ago and learned the hard way. Everything is different in terms of stick non console, stick console and automatic cars. Basically the ONLY common parts used between the automatic and stick cars with consoles are the console body and the console lid.

"Can I use the........" Read the answer to the original post again.

"If so what do I need ..............." You need the console front cover plate that attaches to the console on the top to convert from stick console to auto console.
