It might sound crazy, but is their a top and bottom of the front coil springs, and is their a right or left? Or are both springs the same?

There is a top and a bottom. The flat end is the top.

There is no right and left.

These springs are shown with the tops at the top of the pic:

Also, make sure the bottom is indexed to the correct position. The lower control arm should have two small holes where the springs sits. The end of the spring should cover one or both holes completely.

Agreed! If you look closey at the lower control arm you will see a shoulder where the end of the spring fits into. If you miss it the car will sit funny until you hit a few good bumps and bounce them in the right place. graemlins/clonk.gif

what would happen if they were installed upside down ?

I hope I never find out! I would guess that it would put a lot of stress in areas that are not designed for it. Which could lead to a failure when you were traveiing at a high rate of speed while decending from Pikes Peak which would cause you to go off a steep cliff and crash in a huge ball of fire and be trapped in the car with your brain hemorrhaging from the impact but you don't care so much because you are burning to death and it is such a painful way to go and then you finnaly drift into unconscious before you expire. But that's the worse case senirio of course  Sorry but you asked :D graemlins/waving.gif

that was funny !

The main reason I asked was because when I put mine in they didnt want to go in the way the picture show being the top. Mine sat in very nice with the flat coil on the bottom ??

I had a feeling they might be wrong but they dont seem to fit the other way ?

Dan is right ....... besure to index springs into the proper place in lower control arms .. the spring can & will wear thru if not installed correctly ... dans story sounds about right. when the front end collapize's going around some mountain corner ....sure its a worst case ... but when things go wrong ... do they EVER !!

Glad I brought this subject up. When I bought my 68SS project, I noticed the left front spring wasn't centered in the spring opening in the frame. It even rubs on the frame hole when bounced. When I stuck my finger in the hole, I felt the flat part of the spring in the lower arm. I thought it was upside down, but wanted to make sure I wasn't looking at something major. Plan on taking the springs out and turning them around next week.

Another thing to look at is to make sure that the top of the spring is in the pocket. When I did mine and replaced it with a 2 inch drop springs, the stance was way higher than the stock springs. I realized after a few days that the top of the spring is not in the pocket.

hey guys i know this isnt exactly the correct topic but i figurd hey you guys are talking about springs. I noticed that my stock springs all around have been cut to cheaply lower the car(not my doing). So i was wondering if there are any other cars i could possibly grap a set of springs out of. I need to find the springs in something more common to find at the junkyard. so any help would be appreciated.

I've actually talked to some people that will cut a little off the pass. side spring because they mostly drive alone, and the car seems to sit lower on the driver side du to the drivers weight. I dunno, just something I've heard. As far as grabbing some springs, I would save the money and get new springs. If you get springs out of a junkyard they will probably sag. I gave my stock chevelle springs to a friend and boy the car was lower with my stock springs than with his 1" drop springs.

Honestly, I think you will just end up replacing them in short order or find out your car rides like crap or after they're installed find you dont like the height as they may sag. I would save and pick up a pair of moog springs or hotchkis which will drop the ride height abour an inch and a half all the way around.

My 70 is using hotchkis springs, all stock suspension otherwise....pic is in my sig. Stock 14x7 rims and not that much tire so with 15x8's and a little more meat it would really fill out the wheel well.

Otherwise, I think you can grab springs from any A-body or wagon of the same year, wagon will have cargos in the rear and will have your car sitting higher out back than stocker. Moog springs are realtively inexpensive and are good springs but I am pretty damn happy with the hotchkis.
